Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, chances are you’ve heard of Salt Bae. He became famous after a video went viral in 2017. This video showed him sprinkling salt on a piece of steak by letting it slide on his arm.
Most recently, he was spotted making drinks at the Chill Day Night pasar malam in Taman Mount Austin, Johor Bahru. Or was he?
Unfortunately folks, this guy was just a lookalike. Known as Mendro Tan, he sports Salt Bae’s distinctive look, all the way from the man bun to the shades and facial hair. He runs a pop-up stall at the Chill Day Night pasar malam and the stall is fronted by a large poster of a cartoon Salt Bae-lookalike sporting a singlet, tattoos and his signature sunglasses and ponytail.
The stall serves ‘Duck Shit Coriander Lemon Tea — Violently Punched 30 Times’. Mimicking how a pestle and mortar works, Mendro punches lemons before adding its juice to brewed tea. For the final touch, he adds a hefty serving of coriander to the drink, just like how Salt Bae sprinkles salt. Each cup of hand-punched coriander lemon tea costs RM13.
Mendro’s pop-up stall at the night market is set to run till 19 Jan 2023 but fret not, there’s another location where you can get his famed drink. He runs his own restaurant Chadohatsu in Skudai, Johor Bahru. The restaurant sells Japanese cuisine and is also a bubble tea joint.
Looks like it’s time to head to Johor to find Malaysia’s Salt Bae!
