National Day might be over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still immerse ourselves in the festivities.

To celebrate Singapore’s 54th birthday, Tsuru-Koshi has come up with a Laksa Ebi Tempura Udon (S$10.80), which is available from now till 31 August 2019.

The Laksa Ebi Tempura Udon is exclusive to their Takashimaya outlet, so I headed down to get a taste of some locally-inspired udon.

The bowl of laksa udon comes in a decent serving, with ingredients like fishcake slices and ebi tempura (fried prawns).

Even though one can’t expect the usual fishballs and meatballs in this Japanese version of our laksa, I did wish there were more ingredients (perhaps other tempura varieties) in the dish to get my money’s worth.

The ebi tempura was generous in size, and is plated separately from the udon to prevent them from turning soggy.

I enjoyed the tempura batter, which was crispy and not overly oily, while the prawns were fresh and had a nice bite to them. Compared to the usual prawns that we find in our laksa, these prawns were more succulent.

I started my laksa by slurping up some udon, which was silky and chewy, and paired well with the curry. I felt that the noodles were a similar but nice alternative to the thick vermicelli that we usually have with our laksa.

The laksa curry was pretty standard; light but still flavourful. It also had a spicy kick without being too overwhelming.

One thing I enjoy about eating laksa is having the tau pok (beancurd skin) soak up the curry, which provides an explosion of flavour in your mouth when you take a bite.

Overall, I enjoyed the ebi tempura and udon variations to our usual laksa. But for S$10.80 a bowl, I found it to be a one-time dish to #treatmyself. I’ll probably go back to my usual S$5 hawker centre laksa.

If you’re ever at the Takashimaya Food Hall and want some laksa with a Japanese-twist, head down to Tsuru-Koshi and give their Laksa Ebi Tempura Udon a try before the National Day special ends.
