5 Out-Of-The-Box Mooncake Flavours With Great Discounts That You Must Try This Mid-Autumn Festival 2017

The mooncake season is upon us again, and I’m always excited to see what kind of unique flavours hotels and restaurants come up with every single year.

A mooncake purist might frown upon my train of thought, but I love how out of the box mooncake flavours push the boundaries of traditional mooncakes while remaining extremely tasty. Here are some unique mooncake creations to look out for this mid-autumn festival 2017.

1. Hai Tien Lo’s Caramel With White Lotus Paste Single Yolk Baked Mooncake

White lotus paste single yolk mooncakes are very traditional, but the inclusion of caramel in this mooncake from Hai Tien Lo at Pan Pacific Singapore is slightly more unorthodox, resulting in a creamy and rich paste that has both sweet and salty flavours. Definitely, a must-try for those with a sweet tooth!

If you prefer something a little healthier, try the Low Sugar Purple Sweet Potato with White Lotus Paste Single Yolk. The lotus paste is imbued with purple sweet potato that has plenty of health benefits and is rich in antioxidants.

2. Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore’s Yuzu Bird’s Nest & Chocolate Salted Toffee Snowskin Mooncakes

Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore presents two new snowskin flavours for 2017 with a lucky eight mini pieces (four of each flavour) in a beautiful pastel pink box. The Yuzu Bird’s Nest Snowskin Mooncake has a tangy yuzu filling encasing a core of bird’s nest, a truly luxurious morsel which is destined be a great hit with the ladies.

The other flavour – Chocolate Salted Toffee Snowskin Mooncake is specially created by Shangri-La Hotel’s pastry chef Herve Potus and features a French chocolate blend made of 40% cocoa milk chocolate and 66% cocoa dark chocolate for the filling. Mixed in with sea salt toffee, and encased in a layer of crisp milk chocolate, it’s a decadent treat for chocolate lovers out there.

Enjoy 25% off boxed sets for early bird orders until 31 August 2017 (exclude snowskin mooncakes) when you pay with HSBC credit card.

3. The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore’s Assorted Mini Snowskin Martini Mooncakes

The Ritz Carlton‘s signature Assorted Mini Snowskin Martini mooncakes see two new variants; with Mangotini and Orangetini joining the fray alongside Lycheetini and Espressotini. I enjoy snowskin mooncakes infused with liquor because it reminds me of secretly indulging in alcoholic chocolates when I was younger — these mooncakes are much more sophisticated, and a grown up cousin to those treats.

4. Summer Palace’s Pineapple & Pink Peppercorn Chocolate and Cinnamon Red Bean Snowskin Mooncakes

Regent Singapore has themes for each mid-autumn festival, and this year’s theme is showcased in a special spice carrier mooncake box inspired by Singapore’s history as a port for spice trade along with two new spice infused flavours. Bite into the Pineapple and Pink Peppercorn snow skin mooncake from Regent Singapore and savour the interesting spice from the chilli-infused skin while you taste the sweetness of the pineapple paste.

This mooncake flavour is definitely one of the more inventive ones out there, with different tastes and textures all welding together harmoniously. If you’re looking for something sweeter, try the Cinnamon Red Bean snowskin mooncake; a blend of spiced wine ganache and red bean filling wrapped up in a delicious cinnamon infused snow skin.
