First dibs: Wong Fu Fu — Unlimited bubble tea with mini buffet and Taiwanese-based hot plate dishes

Have you ever had bubble tea and thought to yourself “This could work in a buffet setting”? Well, that finally has been realised by Wong Fu Fu, Singapore’s first Taiwanese-inspired hot plate restaurant with unlimited Taiwan bubble tea and a mini buffet that’s set to open on 23 Feb 2023 along North Bridge Road.

It’s currently Muslim-friendly with a halal certification currently in the works. Wong Fu Fu has also graciously invited us to their media tasting event and here are my first impressions of them.

Wong Fu Fu - Milk Tea booth

First thing’s first, the much revered bottomless Taiwan bubble tea. The milk tea kiosk is set similarly to a buffet, with toppings arranged on the side. It boasts a decent amount of toppings such as the Lychee Popping BobaRainbow Konjac JellyAloe Vera Cubes and of course Tapioca Pearls.

Wong Fu Fu - Milk Tea toppings

I strongly encourage going ham on the toppings as the milk tea itself has zero sugar content which I’ve always preferred. I didn’t even realise there was a sugar syrup pump (mistaking it for a hand sanitiser) but you honestly don’t need it. The lack of sugar makes you appreciate the individual sweetness of the toppings as well as the taste of the milk tea.

I would have liked the milk tea to be served slightly chilled, only because I didn’t want to waste space in my cup with ice when I could have had my third scoop of Strawberry Popping Boba. There was also Iced Lemon Tea should you prefer something conventional.

Those intending to opt solely for bubble tea can do so as a takeaway at S$5.90 without any refills.

Wong Fu Fu - Mini Buffet Bar

Next on my agenda was the Mini Buffet Bar. I know, I know, it’s not a full-scale buffet but still, the chance for me to snap whatever snacks I desired with new shiny tongs — count me in! Some of the options available were serviceable like the fried chicken bits and fish nuggets.

However, the two stand-out items were the Taiwanese Scallion Pancake with Chicken Floss and the Sweet Potato Fries with Plum Powder. Taiwanese Scallion Pancake with Chicken Floss reminded me of a sushi roll with a surprisingly cheesy bite, while the Sweet Potato Fries with Plum Powder were as addicting as their potato counterparts.

My unlimited bowl of snacks and unhinged bubble milk tea creations made for an already satisfying lunch, especially when they are part of the à la carte buffet set which costs S$21.90.

Wong Fu Fu - Taiwanese Fried Chicken

I almost forgot they had an entire main course consisting of hot plate items. Some of the choices include Grilled Seafood (S$31.90)Grilled Chicken (S$24.90)Striploin Steak (S$27.90) and Grilled Lamb Chop (S$32.90). You then pick your carb options like Taiwan Pearl Rice and Pasta followed by sauce options ranging from Black Pepper Sauce to Tomato Sauce.

Wong Fu Fu - Taiwanese Fried Chicken

I opted for the Taiwan Fried Chicken (S$25.90) with Taiwan Egg Fried Rice and Black Pepper Sauce. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for me. The fried chicken was really dry and even a second cup of milk tea didn’t help. The fried rice tasted really basic, almost elementary. That coupled with the steep price left me less than impressed with their mains.

However, it’s still early days for Wong Fu Fu, and I do believe they can only improve moving forward. Speaking of moving forward, diners in groups of 4 need only pay for 3 as an opening promotion till 21 March 2023.
