HO HO HO! I hope you’ve got your Christmas spirit on and are counting down the days until the big man arrives laden with gifts galore. If you’re still not feeling it just yet, we suggest you take a trip down to City Square Mall to get that festive feeling and find that last minute Christmas present.
So where’s City Square Mall? This environmentally sustainable eco-mall is located at the junction of Serangoon and Kitchener Road with direct access to Farrer Park MRT Station (NE8). With over 200 tenants such as Uniqlo, Toys‘R’Us, Golden Village and some 50 F&B outlets, City Square Mall is a family-friendly mall that caters to everyone in the family.
Whilst you’re there, why not check out our pick of these fabulously festive treats? Well, it is Christmas – it would be rude not to indulge…
1. Swensen’s (#03-37/38)
This American style diner has introduced a special Christmas menu for the festive season, and here’s a few picks:
The Turkey Burger ($17.90) is available throughout the month of December and is a lot juicier than the dry old bird that usually graces my dining table each year. Featuring the usual burger trimmings, as well as a fried egg and a Gula Melaka soaked pineapple ring, this will definitely keep you fueled and ready to shop until you drop.
If you still have room post burger, local-inspired desserts will satiate those of you with a sweet tooth.
On the right we have Sweet Corn Fever Forever ($11.50), drawing upon local influences. It’s sweet, it’s crunchy and you’ll want to dive in spoon first. This is definitely one for the sweetcorn, red bean and chendol fans.
Other delights also include the Potong Supreme Pleaser ($11.50) on the left and Child’s Gem Delight ($11.50) in the middle.
Only at City Square Mall’s Swensen’s, enjoy 1-for-1 Christmas Sundaes from now till 31 Dec 2015 when you quote “Seth Lui” upon ordering. Not valid on eve of and Public Holiday or with other promotions or discounts.
2. Cedele Bakery Café (#01-24/25)
The team at Cedele have gone all out this year with their selection of Christmas Yule logs.
We tried out a couple of the special log cake offerings from Cedele like the Flourless Chocolate Log Cake ($7.80 per slice or $52 for the full cake) – this is a take on the traditional log cake, however it’s made sans flour – so it must be good for us, right?
It’s also packed with cacao nibs and blackcurrants. The fruit and bitter nibs cut through the rich chocolate cream cheese frosting. If you’re not in the festive mood after eating this then you must be related to Scrooge.
Another option would be the light, Pandan-flavoured Coconut Paradise Log Cake. Great locally inspired twists on a classic.
This Turkey Ham & Prawn Spinach Slim Bap ($11.50) is a lighter way to indulge in some of your favourite Christmas flavours. My favourite part was the apple chutney – it was sweet, spiced, and really tangy. This bap can be ordered a la carte, or if you really want to get in to the swing of things, why not add on a festive Apple Cinnamon Chai Tea for an extra $2.50?
Nothing screams Christmas louder than cinnamon spiced apples!
3. Paddington House of Pancakes (#02-35/36)
I love pancakes – thin ones, fat ones, fluffy ones. You name it, I love it. Thankfully for me, the team at the only Paddington House of Pancakes in Singapore have created a Christmas Tree Pancake Stack set ($18++) especially for the festive season.
This stack of fluffy American style pancakes, topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream is my kind of Christmas tree. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and the festive colours really got me into the Christmas spirit. This is a great mid afternoon treat for those with weary feet post Christmas shopping.
4. Milk & Honey – Artisan Yogurt & Dessert Bar (#02-K14)
I like the artisanal yogurt and toppings available at Milk & Honey. It’s great all year round but we love what they’re offering from now till 3 Jan 2016.
Check out this cute Christmas Limited Edition Yogurt Parfait ($7.80). The original yogurt is topped with a strawberry crunch, raspberry sauce, coconut meringue and a Pandan flavoured biscuit, oh lest we forget the red velvet cake pop.
I loved the Pandan biscuit and cake pop – something I do not mind expanding my waistline for. Despite all of its adornments, the sourness of the yogurt prevents this from becoming overly sweet.
Only at City Square Mall’s Milk & Honey from now till 3 Jan 2016, you’ll get a free folder for every purchase of the Christmas Parfait – Happy Christmas!
5. Saizeriya Italian Restaurant (#B2-55/56)
If you’ve spent all your pennies on presents and are in need of a feed that won’t break the bank this Christmas, or if you’re a complete bah humbug and want to avoid the festivities at all costs, take a visit to the affordable and cheerful Saizeriya Italian Restaurant.
If you’ve overindulged on mulled wine and need something to get over that festive hangover, you can’t go far wrong with a steaming bowl of this Spaghetti Carbonara ($5.90). The sauce was light and coated each strand of spaghetti well, the bacon and sprinkle of cheese added a salty edge that was much needed. A bargain that will save you cents to spend on presents instead.
The same wallet-friendly value applies to this Sirloin Steak at $11.90. The steak was generous in portion and more importantly at a price you won’t hear me complaining.
6. Délifrance (#B2-04)
If you’re looking for a more substantial meal, head on over to Délifrance and nosh on their festive Christmas menu.
First up is their Santa Roasted Half Spring Chicken (a la carte: $14.90, meal: $16.90). Marinated in a seasonal rub and served with a potato gratin and mesclun salad, this is a lighter take on the traditional Christmas roast dinner. The sauce is rich with herbs, in particular we picked up on rosemary and sage – two herby Christmas stalwarts. The chicken was moist, and the gratin was creamy and cheesy.
Santa clearly did a lot of cooking at Délifrance this year. If you need proof, take a look at this Santa Baked Chicken Roulade (a la carte: $13.90, meal: $15.90). Chicken thighs have been wrapped around a spinach chicken mousse and drizzled with a creamy chicken and mushroom sauce. This is reminiscent of the traditional stuffed turkey breast and tasted surprisingly light given the thickness of the rich sauce.
It tasted as if there was some sage lurking in this dish as well and both dishes are a lighter way to indulge in some of your favourite Christmas flavours.
Only at the City Square Mall’s Délifrance, enjoy a complimentary éclair from now till 3 Jan 2016 for every Santa Meal ordered when you quote “Seth Lui” upon ordering. Valid only for dine-ins.
7. Wingstop (#B1-33/34/K15)
Yes, we know there’s nothing particularly festive about chicken wings themselves, however the good people of Wingstop are giving away an awesome present to one lucky patron this year.
If you spend over $25 on a single order this December, you will be entered into the Wingstop lucky draw and stand the chance to win a year’s worth of wings to keep you going throughout 2016. Having sampled several of these delicious wings, I’d say that’s a pretty sweet Christmas present.
We loved their traditional Louisiana Rub, and the latest addition to the menu – Mango Habanero. It’s sweet, it’s spicy and it’s completely addictive. Wingstop wings are cooked fresh to order and come marinated but not battered. I prefer it this way as it allows the flavour of the chicken to shine and I relish the lighter cooking method.
Only at City Square Mall’s Wingstop from now till 14 Dec 2016, enjoy a 10% off your bill when you quote “Seth Lui” upon ordering.
8. Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant (#03-53/55)
Watami is offering a special festive set menu this year consisting of 3 starters, 1 main course, 1 hotpot, 1 dessert and 2 soft drinks for the price of $69 for 2 people. There’s also a $99 set meal option for 3 people with more sides and a bigger hotpot. You can top this up with $6 to include their chocolate fondue.
Back this Christmas through customer demand, this popular Christmas Otona no Chocolate Fondue is ever so naughty but ever so nice. The molten Belgian chocolate is a decadent bath for fresh fruit and brioche. I love how fun fondue really is, it’s a perfect dessert to share with friends over the festive period. If you’re not indulging in the set menu you can still sample this dish for $10 a la carte.
Only at City Square Mall’s Watami, enjoy the Christmas Otona no Chocolate Fondue at a special top-up price of just $3 when you quote “Seth Lui” upon ordering the Christmas Set Menu.
9. Whips Cupcakes (#B2-K9)
If you’re looking for cupcakes, look no further than Whips Cupcakes. Baked in-house, these mini cupcakes are not only delicious but also beautifully decorated.
I’m in love with their Christmas selection box ($33). Featuring 25 perfectly formed mini cupcakes ranging in flavour from their two new creations Chocolate Mint and Chocolate Blueberry to Red Velvet, I defy you not to start feeling festive after taking a look at this beautifully presented box of goodies. Not only do they look awesome, they taste amazing too.
The cupcakes are light and fluffy and, as they’re mini, it means you can definitely find room for more than one at a time. A great gift for others, or for yourself if you’re feeling greedy!
10. The Manhattan FISH MARKET (#04-12/13)
Christmas is the one time of year when you can indulge guilt-free. This year, why not treat yourself to the king of the sea, our good friend the lobster, at The Manhattan FISH MARKET. Their new Christmas menu showcases lobster in several dishes.
If the mere thought of splashing out on lobster makes your wallet weep, fear not, as the team at Manhattan have created this delicious Lobster Fish n’ Chips ($25.95 whole lobster / $19.95 half lobster) that will satisfy your taste buds and your bank account. Merry Christmas to that.
The lobster was surprisingly good, it was moist, sweet and the creamy herb topping was an indulgent touch. Served with fries and an aglio macaroni, this is a present I would recommend treating yourself to.
This Lobster Bouillabaisse ($17.95) with added green and red peppers in the gravy gives that festive touch, and if there’s a beautifully cooked lobster on my plate, I’m not complaining.
This year City Square Mall is the host of a veritable feast of festive treats and activities. Be sure to visit throughout the month of December in order to finish off your gift shopping and sample these delicious Christmas inspired menus.
Other than the restaurants listed here, there’s a plethora of other casual, family-friendly F&B establishments like Momiji, Marutama Ra-Men, Breeks Café and Astons Specialties that will please the palate of the entire family. Check out the full list of food shops here.
From 20 Nov to 3 Jan 2016, City Square Mall will be transformed into a Sponge-tastic wonderland; get ready to dive into the pineapple under the sea and join Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends this Christmas.
