Many restaurants are criticised for offering free food to earn high ratings. However, 87 Just Thai Killiney faced another issue – a 2-star review after a customer failed to notice the indication for additional taxes on the menu.
On 5 Jan, 87 Just Thai took to Facebook to report on the peculiar incident that occurred at their Killiney Road branch. Despite enjoying the food, a diner had given them a 2-star rating on Google reviews, complaining about the GST and service charge.
According to the commenter, the charges (10% respectively) were shown on the bill after payment, but not in the menu.
This baffled the restaurant, as it clearly stated the presence of additional tax charges at the bottom of the menu.
Facebook users were quick to defend it, pointing out that even if the charges weren’t stated, they should have been expected. Some even called the reviewer self-entitled, and said they made the review just to sabotage the eatery’s reputation.
In response, the bistro thanked the commenters for their support. “We just find it hard to believe…because of this review, our rating is going to be affected,” it replied.
87 Just Thai Killiney currently holds a 4.5-star rating on Google Maps Reviews. Previous customers have commended the eatery for its excellent service, reasonable prices, and good quality food.
It is one of two 87 Just Thai outlets (the other situated in Holland Village) promising authentic Thai food under S$20.
Popular customer choices include the Boat Noodle Beef Soup (S$12) and Thai Braised Pork Knuckle Rice (S$9). One of their newer dishes is Tom Yum Oh Ho (S$16.90), made with Mama noodles and their classic Tom Yum Soup (S$9).
Many eateries have been subject to the GST hike over the years, from 7% in 2022 to 9% in 2024.
For prices excluding GST, restaurants are usually required to state the presence of additional charges, to avoid misleading customers. As such, it is recommended that one looks through the menu carefully to prevent any misunderstanding.
