Dickson Nasi Lemak reopens with new menu items after two month closure following the Malaysia chicken ban

Fans of Dickson Nasi Lemak, rejoice! The popular nasi lemak joint has finally reopened on 1 August 2022 after two months of closure.

Dickson Nasi Lemak, located in Joo Chiat, had a temporary closure from 1 June to 31 July 2022, due to Malaysia’s ban on the exports of chicken to Singapore, which affected their business greatly. The closure had initially been intended to last a month until 30 June 2022, but was extended by a month.

Finally, nasi lemak lovers can get their fix once more, as Dickson Nasi Lemak’s takeaway kiosk in Joo Chiat reopens with a new menu. Their mains come in the following varieties: Chicken Rendang (S$8.30), made with chicken that is slow-cooked for 15 hours, Beef Rendang (S$8.60), which similarly comes with beef slow-cooked for 15 hours, and Sambal Sotong (S$8), containing chilli cuttlefish. Each main is served with coconut rice, egg, cucumber, anchovies and peanuts.

Due to stock issues, Dickson Nasi Lemak announced that their Ayam Goreng Berempah is unfortunately not available yet, but promises that their new rendang dishes are just as good.

Malaysia’s ban on chicken exports started on 1 June 2022, causing Singapore to lose about 34 per cent of its chicken imports. This caused local businesses selling chicken dishes to be affected, as prices of fresh chickens rose. Singapore has since diversified to import chickens from other sources.

Though I have not personally tried Dickson Nasi Lemak’s dishes, I have read good things about them. It is heartening to see this local business reopen after its two month closure, and I can’t wait to check out their new dishes when I am in the Joo Chiat area.
