Legendary 81-year-old Onan Road Karipap to close permanently on 10 Sep 2023

The beloved Joo Chiat eatery, Indian Muslim Bakery & Confectionery Pte Ltd, more affectionately known as Onan Road Karipap, will be closing its doors permanently on 10 Sep 2023.

The business announced this news via a post on its Facebook page on 7 Sep 2023. The business did not disclose the reason for the sudden closure, and asked for the public to respect their decision and to not ask about it.

Onan Road Karipap has been running since 1942, and in its 81 years of operations, it has garnered a steady group of loyal supporters, both young and old. The Joo Chiat shop sells a variety of baked goods and other treats, with their large flaky curry puffs, known as karipap, being their most famous product.

Aside from their karipaps, Onan Road Karipap sells freshly-baked cakes, kueh and even bentos for customers to grab a quick meal.

The news was met with widespread sadness from supporters of Onan Road Karipap, with many expressing their shock at the sudden closure. The Facebook post announcing the closure was flooded with over 300 supportive comments from the business’s fans and loyal customers in less than 24 hours, showcasing just how popular and well-loved they were in the community.

Some netizens said that the store had the best karipap they’d ever tasted, while others thanked the business for the delicious food and the wonderful memories.

Many of them also expressed that they’d been frequent visitors of the shop since they were young. One netizen even added that their aunt, who lives in Kuala Lumpur, would travel down to Singapore just to buy their karipap.

Since the announcement of the closure, Onan Road Karipap has reportedly become much more crowded, with fans of their products rushing to get a final taste before they’re gone for good.

It is deeply saddening to see this beloved business shutter for good, and we wish the owners all the best in their future endeavours.
