Studio Ghibli is a beloved and well-recognised name for lovers of animated films. Founded in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, the animation studio has long been renowned for visually rich and emotionally profound works.
We headed down to the ArtScience Museum to check out the studio’s first official showcase in Singapore: The World of Studio Ghibli.

This is one of the largest exhibitions to date. Artists have transformed 11 galleries across 2 levels into immersive, large-scale theatrical sets. 11 iconic Studio Ghibli films are represented, including My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away.

Highlights include installations from Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Castle in the Sky, as well as various sculptures like a giant figure from Ponyo in the museum’s lily pond.

The installations offer visitors chances to immerse themselves in interactive experiences, or recreate iconic scenes from the films.

The exhibition also features 16 original box art installations that offer intricate, close-up views of frames from the films. You might be able to spot some Easter eggs if you look closely!

Additionally, visitors can participate in activities designed by the ArtScience Museum’s Education team. Try your hand at drawing soot sprites, writing notes of gratitude, or creating a thaumatrope featuring characters from My Neighbour Totoro.
There is also a retail store on level 3 offering a wide selection of official merchandise.
The World of Studio Ghibli runs from Oct 4 2024 to Feb 2 2025. For more information, click here.
