If the idea of watching the sunrise from your camper window or pulling over by a waterfall for lunch sounds like something straight out of a Pinterest board, here’s some good news! Starting 1 Jan 2026, Malaysians will finally be able to rent recreational vehicles (RVs) for self-drive holidays.

It’s all thanks to a new government policy that officially recognises and regulates RV rentals for tourism. Announced by the Ministry of Transport (MOT), the move is meant to boost Malaysia’s RV tourism scene — an industry that’s been quietly growing.
Why this matters (and why it’s pretty exciting)

Under the new policy, RVs will be officially recognised as Self-Drive Tourist Hire Vehicles in Peninsular Malaysia and as Self-Drive Hire Cars in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan. That essentially means renting an RV will be just as legitimate as renting a car.
Only new RVs — Completely Knocked Down (CKD) or Completely Built Up (CBU) — will be eligible for commercial use. But if you’re someone who already owns one, do not fret!
Privately owned RVs registered before 31 Dec 2025 can also be rented out, provided they’re under 15 years old and pass a safety inspection.
The MOT and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) are also working on a streamlined “single window” system. So instead of juggling multiple applications, operators will only need one tourism-related licence.
Once the policy kicks in, getting your hands on a home-on-wheels will be as easy as booking a hotel room. Several companies are already setting up shop to make RV travel a mainstream option. Facebook Marketplace is also popular for second-hand finds.
The RV types you’ll spot on the road
Not all RVs are created equal. Your choice will depend on the kind of adventure you’re planning. Here’s a quick guide to what’s out there:

- Caravans: A towable trailer that attaches to your car, ideal for weekend getaways and campsite stays.

- Campervans: Vans converted into mini homes, often with beds, kitchens, and basic amenities — perfect for couples or solo travellers.

- Motorhomes: Full-fledged homes on wheels with more space and comfort, ideal for long journeys or family road trips.
With RV tourism about to take off, the way we explore Malaysia could change completely. Imagine cruising from Penang’s beaches to Cameron Highlands’ tea hills — all without ever checking into a hotel. So pack light, plan loosely, and let the road decide the rest.
