I’m guessing you guys are kind of bored by the sheer number of Nanyang-style cafes opening up around Singapore, especially after the popular Oriental Kopi from Malaysia landed here. But we’re not turning down another addition to the ever-growing list. Ubi residents may already be familiar with Next Chapter Eating House at 304 Ubi Avenue 1, which opened in Apr 2025.

The eatery has been flying under the radar on social media, only making its Instagram debut in November.

next chapter - roast meat

The owner, Ipoh-born Mr Chong, used to work in the F&B industry in Singapore for 20 years before deciding to open his very own cafe. Next Chapter Eating House prides itself in using charcoal to grill its range of meats and crafting its own kaya.

next chapter - wantan mee

The Charcoal Roasted Char Siew Wanton Noodles (S$5.30) was a great start. The thin mee kia, enveloped in a savoury-sweet dark soya-based sauce, was crowned with slices of charred char siew, a couple of fried wantons, green veggie, and a bowl of soup with 3 boiled dumplings.

The char siew was moist, nicely charred and had a thin layer of glaze. I just wished they were cut a tad thicker for a more satisfying mouthfeel.

next chapter - chicken rice

Next, we tried the Signature Boneless Hainanese Chicken Rice Set (S$6.80). My dining partner and I debated between the poached and roasted chicken, as she usually doesn’t go for the former. In the end, we reached a consensus on the poached version — and thank goodness we did.

next chapter - poached chicken

The poached chicken here has got to be one of the most tender and silkiest versions I’ve ever had, beating loads of other chicken rice stalls flat.

next chapter - curry noodle

Ipoh-style curry mee lovers should go for their signature Crispy Fried Chicken Cutlet Curry Noodles (S$6.80).

A combination of yellow mee and thin bee hoon is soaked in a robust curry gravy, topped with crispy chunks of chicken cutlet, tau pok, potato cubes and tau geh.

next chapter - kaya toast set

next chapter - nanyang kopi

Enjoy a Homemade Kaya Butter Toast Set (S$4.80) that comes with soft-boiled eggs and your choice of coffee or tea. The bread is grilled to a crisp while the homemade kaya is well balanced and fragrant, pairing exceptionally well with the rich butter.

next chapter - overview

These are just some of the offerings you can find on the menu of Next Chapter Eating House.

If you’re sending your car in for servicing or working nearby, consider stopping by for lunch to explore their full lineup of delicious food and drinks — who knows, you might just become a regular.
