The Eastside has always been the best side for a multitude of reasons, but it seems that this year is bringing us reason after reason to get all the more excited about my little ‘hood. Joining the likes of newly-unveiled Neptune, East Coast Commune, Five Oars Coffee Roasters, and La Fez, Ambling Turtle is the east side’s newest kid on the block.

Having just opened last Saturday on 8th May, the cosy cafe is already generating enough excitement for both the east AND west dwellers. Right off the bat, its glasshouse-esque interior sells itself, with sunlight filtering through their floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the gorgeous space. It’s also got a second-floor loft, snugly fitting three tables worth of guests.

Staying true to its Peranakan roots in the heart of Katong, the 40-seater cafe serves up a modern Peranakan fare so you’ll get to satisfy both your nyonya cravings while clocking in the snaps for the ‘gram.

Particularly, I’ve got my eye on the savouries like Pulled Beef Rendang (S$8.50), Satay Chicken (S$6.50), and Nyonya Curry Chicken (S$6.50). Though the sweet-toothed might want to get in on pastries such as the Pulut Hitam Tart (S$6.50), Go Home Pandan Waffles (S$12.50) with coconut soft serve and chendol jelly, as well as the Ondeh Ondeh Cake (S$7.50), which is a local dessert lover’s dream on a plate.

To pair, snag yourself a taste of some coffee blends at Ambling Turtle by famed Common Man Coffee Roasters, and give some of their espresso-packed drinks a try. Here, they’ve got the standard Latte (S$6), Cappuccino (S$6), Espresso (S$3.50), and Kopi Jawa (S$6.50), which is also known as Java coffee.
