1. Chara Woodfire

Some restaurants make you notice the food first; at Chara Woodfire in Bangsar, it is the fire that catches your eye. The name itself reflects this approach: “Char” nods to the smoky flavours of the flame, while “A” represents its Asian influences. Even “Cara”, meaning “way” or “method” in Malay, ties into the restaurant’s philosophy of doing things their own way.

From the bar, you can watch embers glow beneath the parilla grill as steaks, ribs and whole fish are slowly kissed by the heat. The cooking here is rooted in the flavours of Asia, with durian wood used to build a clean, fragrant smoke that gives each dish a deeper layer of flavour.

The restaurant itself is easy to settle into, with warm, softly lit interiors and an alfresco area that is more relaxed and neighbourhood-like. Still, I would recommend sitting near the bar if you can. Watching the kitchen work the grill while dinner comes together adds to the experience, especially when you see a whole fish blistering over the coals.

The Seared 3-Day Aged Tuna (RM34) is a good opener, pairing tender tuna with ponzu, ginger oil and sweet orange segments. For something considerably richer, the Roasted Bone Marrow (RM59) arrives charred over an open flame with onion jam, grilled sourdough and bone jus — the sort of dish that is so rich it’s best shared.

The real stars of the grill are none other than their unforgettable mains. Start strong with Signature Angus Ribs (RM99) — smoked for 12 hours over durian wood before being served with spicy peanut sauce and shallot anchovy salad.

You can’t go wrong with a hefty plate of Slow Roasted Lamb Ribs (RM69 or RM129), finished on the parrilla grill with smoked tomato chutney and spiced yoghurt.

Seafood is treated with the same level of expertise as everything else. Aged before being grilled over coals, the Whole Butterflied Saba Mackerel (RM68) is served with fresh salad and charred pineapple sauce.

For sides, we highly recommend Roasted Cauliflower & Anchovy Cream (RM14) and Cream Spinach (RM12).
There is a warmth to Chara that makes you want to stay a little longer, especially once dinner is underway. Come for the woodfire, stay for the smoky, Asian-leaning flavours, and linger a little longer by the grill.

2. IVY Rooftop Restaurant Bar & Lounge

When the night is young but dinner plans are already feeling a little too predictable, IVY Rooftop Restaurant Bar & Lounge offers a more atmospheric alternative in KL. Open from 4pm until 3am daily, this rooftop venue blends intimate dining with a lively bar scene, making it equally suited to after-work drinks, late-night catch-ups and unhurried evenings with friends.
The space strikes a balance between sophistication and comfort. Think softly lit indoor seating, a sleek bar, private rooms for smaller gatherings and an outdoor patio for those who prefer their drinks with a little open air. Artistic installations and nature-inspired touches add a subtle sense of mystery without overwhelming the setting.

Start your meal with appetising offerings, featuring Crab Croquettes (RM29), Fig & Goat Cheese Tartine (RM26), and Flame-Grilled Tornado Kebab (RM48), amongst others.
Cocktails are naturally at the heart of the experience. Signature creations include Poison IVY (RM52), a herbal and citrus-forward drink, Passion Potion (RM49) with tropical fruit and vanilla, and Marry Me Juliet (RM48), a refreshing combination of basil and cucumber.
Classic cocktails are well represented too, from Classic Martini (RM48) and Old Fashioned (RM48) to Cosmopolitan (RM44), Espresso Martini (RM58) and Negroni (RM48). There are also wines, champagne, spirits, beers and mocktails for those taking things slower.

3. Rimbar

Who says you need to leave KL to go camping? Tucked in Chinatown, Rimbar KL brings the great outdoors indoors as Malaysia’s first camping-themed bar, complete with tents, lush greenery and plenty of cocktails to keep the night going. Plants even spill from the bar top, adding to the feeling of stumbling upon a little forest hideaway in the middle of the city.

The food follows the same adventurous spirit, drawing from flavours across Asia and beyond. Start with Kolae Chicken Satay (RM44), featuring juicy chicken thigh marinated in Southern Thai-style curry before being flame-grilled, or Seeded Sourdough with Jeow Som Butter (RM24) for something warm, tangy and aromatic.
For sharing, there is plenty to graze on, including Corn Kakiage with Harissa Aioli (RM25), Cured Sea Perch (RM28), Shrimp Beignet (RM27), Harissa Grilled Squid (RM32) and Potato Mochi (RM20) with mozzarella and sambal sour cream. The Mango Curry Mantao (RM22) is another fun pick, pairing crispy mantao buns with fragrant mango coconut curry.
Don’t skip the cocktails. House creations such as Banana Havana (RM38), Assam Jawa Sour (RM40), Matcha Old Fashioned (RM45) and Campfire Tiramisu (RM40) make Rimbar particularly appealing for an evening of drinks and discovery.

4. Sarastro KL by Millennium

Some of KL’s best nights begin behind a bookshelf. Hidden inside Millennium Lounge on the 8th floor of Tribeca Serviced Suites, Sarastro KL by Millennium is a tucked-away dining and drinking spot where live music, wine and modern tapas come together in a bar-like intimate setting.
The concealed entrance sets the tone, leading into a space designed for lingering. Private dining areas cater to smaller celebrations, while the main dining room offers a more relaxed backdrop for dinner and drinks. Come later in the evening and live music adds another layer to the experience without overpowering conversation.

The menu takes a broad approach to comfort food, with Spicy Calamari (RM38), Chicken Karaage (RM33), Gambas Al Ajillo (RM48) and Baby Octopus (RM40) among the snacks. There is also Smoked Duck (RM40), Truffle Fries (RM22) and Golden Enoki Shrimp (RM25) for sharing.
For something more substantial, the Asian selection includes Claypot Assam Pedas (RM30) with seabass, Heritage Curry Prawn (RM38) and Royale Blue Nasi Lemak (RM49) with grilled lamb rack. Western mains range from Grilled Chicken Chop (RM48) and Norwegian Salmon (RM68) to Classic Ribeye Steak (RM118) and Peri-Peri Short Ribs (RM128).
The cocktail list is equally considered, spanning Millennium Spritz (RM50), Amaro Sour (RM35), Old Cuban (RM40) and Love At First Sip (RM40), alongside classics such as Negroni, Old Fashioned and Margarita.

5. TAP ROOM KL

A bamboo grove, a waterfall and a glass of locally brewed craft beer — TAP ROOM KL is hardly your typical bar or pub. Set in a lush, nature-filled space that can accommodate up to 500 guests, this sprawling venue brings together PaperKite craft beer, Neapolitan-style pizza and Malaysian-inspired food under one roof.

The Malaysian angle runs through much of the menu, with ingredients sourced locally wherever possible. Start with Chilli Lava Crab (RM48.80), pairing crab meat in a spicy chilli crab sauce with golden mantou and youtiao, or Gambas Al Ajillo (RM48.80) made with local tiger prawns, garlic oil and dried chilli. Chargrilled Chicken Satay (RM38.80) gives the familiar Malaysian favourite a modern spin, served with sweet potato chips and house-made peanut sauce.
There is plenty for sharing, from Roasted Cauliflower (RM24.80) and Grilled Eggplant (RM24.80) to Cheesy Prawn Toast (RM27.80), Grilled Octopus Leg (RM53.80) and Oxtail Quesadilla (RM38.80). For something lighter, Watermelon Meze (RM13.80) and Garlic Chilli Edamame (RM11.80) make easy companions for drinks.
The real draw, however, may be the PaperKite craft beer, brewed on-site in small batches. Six varieties are available, including Hoppy Lager, Pale Ale, Witbier, Copper Ale, IPA and Oatmeal Stout, with glasses from RM23. There is also a PaperKite Flight (RM88) for those who want to sample all six.

6. Bar.Kar

At Bar.Kar KL, fire is more than a cooking method. Inspired by the Malay word bakar, meaning “to burn” or “to grill”, this contemporary restaurant brings open-flame cooking into a lively chef-counter setting, where diners can watch the kitchen work its magic over wood and charcoal.

The menu takes Malaysian ingredients and familiar flavours into more unexpected territory. Start with Egg & Toast 2.0, pairing homemade Hainan bread with chicken bakkwa and a 63°C free-range egg, or go more luxurious with fresh truffle and caviar. The Grilled Cockle Kerabu Skewer brings together crispy betel leaves, bunga kantan and a savoury dressing, while Chilli & Spices Prawn Toast uses wild-caught Sabah prawns with fermented chilli and torched flowers.
Drinks follow the same Malaysian-inspired philosophy. Cocktails reinterpret familiar flavours and ingredients, with creations such as Nyonya Truffle, Kuih Talam, and Tropicana Kopi, and Duck Soup bringing everything from assam boi and pandan to kopi, ginger and smoked duck into the glass.
For a more immersive meal, the 18-seat chef’s table puts you right at the bar, while the Cave Room offers a more intimate setting for groups of up to 12.

7. Vagabond KL

Tucked away in Sri Hartamas, Vagabond KL brings a playful Southeast Asian sensibility to modern dining, with familiar flavours reworked into dishes that are equal parts inventive and comforting, plus a bar for drinks.

The menu starts strong with Umai Pie Tee, pairing blanched squid and scallop mousse with umai gel and ikura in crisp shells. Sarawak Laksa Oysters give plump oysters a local twist with a laksa butter emulsion and coriander oil, while the Chiko Roll stuffs Sichuan mala chicken into a crisp roll with smoked century egg gribiche.
There are plenty of supporting acts worth ordering too, including Tofu E Pepe, which swaps the usual pasta for house-made egg noodles tossed in Sarawakian black pepper and tofu cream sauce, plus Miso Cabbage with charred cabbage, miso caramel and Thai basil mayo.
Dessert keeps things unexpected. Terung Asam Cheesecake pairs a burnt Basque cheesecake with terung asam jam, while Mushroom ‘Ma Lai Gao’ disguises Milo mousse and raspberry compote beneath shiitake chips.

8. The Dark Horse

Just a short walk from KLCC, Bukit Bintang, and KL Tower, The Dark Horse KL is a contemporary sports bar built for big appetites and even longer nights. The spacious venue pairs stylish interiors with foosball, darts, and pool tables, giving diners plenty to do between rounds of food and drinks.

The menu is unapologetically hearty, with familiar bar favourites taking centre stage. Burgers are a major draw, served on homemade brioche buns with options including The Oklahoma Smash, made with two smashed Australian beef patties, and The Dirty Walter, stacked with beef bacon, a fried egg, pickled onions, jalapeño, and cheddar.
For something even more ambitious, there’s The Mount Kinabalu Burger, a towering creation featuring 10 quarter-pounder beef patties and 10 slices of cheddar cheese. Finish it within 30 minutes and the challenge comes with a free meal.
Beyond burgers, the kitchen serves a wide range of Western comfort food, including BBQ Short Rib, country-style roast chicken, chicken parmigiana, fish and chips, beef lasagna, and creamy mac and cheese bake.

9. Bara On Six

For a more polished night out, Bara On Six at Traders Hotel KL pairs the classic steakhouse experience with an oyster bar and a distinctly Malaysian point of view. The contemporary restaurant focuses on premium cuts and fresh local produce, with plenty of seafood, craft gins, and lighter dishes for diners after something beyond the usual steak-and-potatoes formula.

The menu starts with a strong selection of seafood and appetisers. Farmed Tiger Prawn Hinava gives the Borneo staple a refined treatment, pairing cured tiger prawns with ginger flower, shallots, chilli, Cameron chives, and Highland lime. There’s also Grilled Wagyu Bone Marrow, served with sticky sweet oxtail, onion jam, chimichurri, and charred sourdough, alongside classics such as beef tartare, seared scallops, crab cakes, and prawn and lobster cocktail.
Naturally, steaks take centre stage. Cuts include grain-fed and grass-fed Angus, alongside Wagyu Sanchoku, with options ranging from tenderloin and ribeye to larger sharing cuts. The in-house dry-aged selection is particularly tempting, featuring Angus striploin, ribeye, and porterhouse T-bone aged for up to 42 days.
Round things off with desserts like Log Koko, made with Pahang artisanal chocolate, or coconut crème brûlée with crystallised candied ginger. For an intimate celebration or special dinner, a private dining room for up to 12 guests is also available.

10. Sun & Moon Imbi

Sun & Moon at Imbi changes personality as the day goes on. By day, this all-day dining spot serves vibrant brunch plates, coffee, matcha, and lighter fare for slow mornings or casual catch-ups. Come 6pm, the Moon menu takes over, shifting the space into a warm bistro and bar with live performances, right in the heart of KL.

The evening menu has plenty of playful twists on familiar flavours. Start with Farmed Tiger Prawn Hinava, which takes inspiration from the Bornean appetiser with cured tiger prawns, ginger flower, shallots, chilli, Cameron chives, and Highland lime. Chili Tomato Crab Donut puts sweet-spicy crab on a fluffy donut, while Chili Garlic Tiger Prawn pairs juicy prawns with garlic, chilli, black olives, and sourdough.
The bigger plates continue that fusion approach. Budu Steak & Egg brings together grilled Argentinian sirloin, fries, a sunny-side-up egg, salad, and a savoury beef jus laced with budu. There’s also Fish En Papillote, featuring sea bream cooked with Malaysian herbs and a mix of prawns, clams, and squid.
Desserts keep things indulgent, with 70% Valrhona Chocolate Terrine, truffle cheesecake, tiramisu, and honey butter toast. During the day, its drinks menu also covers ceremonial matcha, hojicha, genmaicha, specialty coffee, fizzy fruit drinks, and house signatures. By night, you can expect an assortment of wine, whiskey, and gin, amongst others.
