On the morning of Mar 19, a fire broke out along Queen Street at Chang Cheng Mee Wah coffeeshop.
Chang Cheng Mee Wah, a small, unassuming coffeeshop tucked away along the same street, was known for their consistently good quality food and reasonable prices.

A report from Zaobao stated that the fire started at a vegetable stall in the coffeeshop. However, details about how and when it started are unknown for now. What is known is that the SCDF reacted promptly and had the fire under control by noon.
Possible reasons for the fire are a leak in the gas pipes or improper installation of the kitchen exhaust ducting. It could also be that the coffeeshop had pre-existing electrical faults caused by overworked motors.
Hence, the SCDF advises staff to perform routine cleaning on the ducts and kitchen hoods once every 12 months to minimise the risk of fire.

MP for Jalan Besar, Denise Phua, has come out on Facebook to address the situation, giving information about the resources and help given to tide the affected residents over this tough time.
She has stated that the Jalan Besar’s grassroots volunteers will be around and assisting those who were affected by the fire. Moreover, she wrote that the Jalan Besar town council will be working to restore power and electricity in the area.
As of 20 Mar 2026, it is reported that several households have had their electricity supply cut off, with some even having to relocate due to the heat and stuffiness. The situation is worsened with the upcoming Hari Raya celebration looming just a day after, as residents scramble to relocate or to redecorate.
MP Denise Phua has advised residents who were affected by the fire to dial the Resident’s Network.
