10 stalls to check out at Circuit Road Hawker Centre

I rarely frequent the underrated Circuit Road Hawker Centre now, however, I do have patchy memories of making morning trips here with my family for breakfast growing up. While it was slightly inconvenient to get here in the past, today, it’s merely a mile away from MacPherson MRT station.

Not to be confused with Circuit Road Market & Food Centre (which also has a slew of hidden gems), today I’ll be uncovering a couple of my favourite stalls at the hawker centre instead. Strangely enough, many always get the two confused. Case in point: me.

1. Victor Veggie (#01-92)

Victor Veggie 2

First up is Victor Veggie. Here’s the catch, they sell mock meat versions of local dishes. My experience with mock meat has never been an easy one— some places do it well, and some places ruin it well. However, this stall has received plenty of raving reviews. Besides, Uncle Victor (the stall owner) is a true Indie kid for advocating vegetarianism before it became the hype it is today.

Victor Veggie 15

In an attempt to make vegetarian options more appealing to the locals, Uncle Victor started researching and re-creating food that is familiar to our palates. Commendable effort.

Here, you can find mock meat Satay (S$10 for 10 sticks), Otah-otah (S$2), Curry Noodles, and even Vegetarian Bak Kut Teh

If you’re not all about the vegetarian life, head over for their Satay. Mock meat or not, satays are all the rage at any food centre.

2. Briyani By Hamidah Bi (#01-14)

Briyani By Hamidah Bi 8

Located at the far right corner of Circuit Road Hawker Centre is an unassuming briyani stall. Till today, I’ve only met a handful of people who dislike briyani. And the ones who swear by this dish are the ones I trust with my life.

Briyani By Hamidah Bi 5

They only serve two briyani dishes here, Mutton Briyani (S$6) and Chicken Briyani (S$6)

The mutton chunks found in the Mutton Briyani were melt-in-your-mouth tender with a nice gamey flavour that would delight any fan of the meat. The ratio of meat to rice was also perfect, with enough meat to pair with every spoonful of fluffy rice.

I was also surprised to find that the Chicken Briyani comes with a whole chicken leg. The meat for this dish is fall-off-the-bone tender while the rice was fragrant and fluffy. Do note that raisins are added to the rice for that sweet surprise!

The dalcha and achar complement the individual briyani dish too. Personally, the briyani here can be eaten without the addition of dalcha as it’s that good on its own!

3. Yong Lai Fa Ji Shu Shi (#01-66)

If you’re a fan of fish soup, this stall is for you. Besides, it’s not every day you come across a fish soup stall that sells fish heads anyway. Personally, I’ve never been a fan, but after years of observing my dad dissect each part of a fish head carefully, I can safely say, it takes a lot of skill (and patience) to finish it. The end result is always rewarding.

From S$4, expect to find a simple-looking yet flavourful serving of fish soup with the usual choice of rice, bee hoon, and other carbs. Many have mixed reviews about this stall, personally, the portion of ingredients here is just right.

Besides their fresh ingredients, I also heard they’ve a strong following due to their fresh fish sticks. Interesting.

4. DP Creations Patisserie (#01-25)

Bakeries aplenty at various hawker centres, so what makes DP Creations Patisserie stand out you wonder? Well, I’m here to answer that question. Here, expect to find handmade creamy chicken pies and authentic Australian beef pies by couple and business owners, Chef Pell and Mr Daniel.

Upon first glance, one will notice that their pies are relatively small in size, akin to that of an egg tart. Their compact size makes it difficult to stop at one too.

They have four different sizes for their pies: Regular, Large, Family Size, and Mini Size. Their Beef Pies start from S$3 each for a 50g filling, and can go up to S$58. The Chicken Pies, on the other hand, start from S$2.80 each for a 50g filling, and like the beef, can go all the way up to S$58. They also sell Vegetable Pies, Egg Tarts (S$1.80 each), and Old School Curry Puff (S$2 each)

Like many hawker centres in Singapore, you’re bound to find at least one stall that sells Lor Mee. The delicious bowl of gooey goodness is definitely a hit among many.

For S$3, you will get a regular-sized bowl of sweet-tasting Lor Mee. If you’re a huge eater, I’d recommend you go for the S$4 or S$5 option as the S$3 bowl may end up being too little for you.

This stall serves a range of stews and rice. Trust me when I say you’d be spoiled for choice! A unique menu item is definitely their aromatic mushroom rice— mixed with mushroom chunks and mock meat. They also have pumpkin rice, black-eyed peas with black sesame rice, and more!

Ho Jia Bo” is a Hokkien phrase which translates to “is it delicious?”. The name of this stall is enough to attract you to it. The lady manning the stall is one of the friendliest you’d ever meet as well.

8. Tian Seng Fried Prawn Mee 添成炒蝦麺 (#01-10)

I couldn’t possibly write about the available food at a hawker centre without adding a fried prawn mee stall to the mix, right? Usually packed with long queues, Tian Seng Fried Prawn Mee has gained quite the reputation for itself (all good, of course).

For S$3 only, you will get a pretty decent plate of authentic Hokkien Mee done the old-school way, loaded with wok hei. Waiting time, however, differs based on the crowd. Do note that there is

9. Omar’s Halal Thai Beef Noodles (#01-54)

Another stall worth a feature is Omar’s Halal Thai Beef Noodles. While I agree that there’s an influx of halal Thai food around these days, this stall actually comes with a Google rating of 4.4 stars coupled with raving reviews.

A bowl of authentic Thai Beef Noodles will set you back at S$6. Not a fan? They also serve Green Curry (S$6), Creamy Chicken Tom Yam (S$6), Thai Fish Cake (S$6), and more. And they have Basil Mutton (S$6) instead of beef as well.

Situated right beside Tian Seng Fried Prawn Mee is NanXiang Claypot Rice. Now, I don’t know about you, but stalls that sell claypot rice are gradually decreasing. With a Google rating of 4.3 stars, you already know what’s up.

Their well-liked Traditional Claypot Chicken Rice comes in three different sizes: S7 for small, S$14 for medium and S$21 for large. Many also mentioned that they are one of the better claypot rice stalls around. Recommended dishes are BBq Pork Special Sauce (S$7) and Pig Trotter Vinegar (S$7)
