Who doesn’t love a good zi char stall? One of the more formidable ones includes Claypot & Cooked Food Kitchen, located in the Green Zone of Chinatown Complex. It serves up hearty, Cantonese-style zi char dishes, making it a fan favourite among foodies.
Unfortunately for long-time fans, Claypot & Cooked Food Kitchen has silently shuttered as of last week.
Netizens have mentioned that the stall owner, Uncle Hong, had a bad fall sometime last year which resulted in a shattered pelvic bone – during which the stall was closed for some time during his recovery. It is also worth mentioning that fellow foodies were speculating if that would be the end of the stall.
However, loyal diners were pleasantly surprised when they returned once again earlier this year to find the business operating as usual. So imagine their total shock when it quietly closed once again last week – this time permanently.
The reason shared was that Uncle Hong’s past injury has been posing a recurring issue for him to work as he usually would, hence the need for permanent closure – as well as his retirement.
Known among foodies as a hidden gem, Claypot & Cooked Food Kitchen has a rich history of serving up a delectable variety of zi char dishes such as Sweet & Sour Pork (S$13), Kung Pao Chicken (S$12), and Sambal Kang Kong (S$6), among others.
We’re not sure if Uncle Hong will eventually pass over the reins to someone else to continue his legacy, but we hope that this really isn’t the last we’ll see of them.
