A common struggle that many night owls might have would be the difficulty of finding places to dine at. With most eateries and restaurants being closed in the wee hours of the night, Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles is the perfect spot to drop by for a meal at any time in the day.

Located in Clarke Quay, Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles is open 24/7, to cater to both early morning risers and night owls. When I visited the stall on an early weekday morning, I was surprised by the vast number of dishes offered at the stall, as it had over 25 dishes showcased on the overhead display.

Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles is most popular for its titular minced meat noodles, which comes with a large variety of ingredient options, including abalone, sea asparagus, pig’s liver, fish maw, prawn, fried dumplings and even pacific clams. I was spoilt for choice!

What I tried at Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles

I decided to go with the Fried Dumpling Minced Meat Noodles (S$5.90), which came with mee pok noodles, minced meat, pork slices, fishcakes, bean sprouts, mushrooms, a fishball, a meatball, anchovies and even a piece of abalone. I was surprised at the incredible amount of ingredients loaded into the bowl.

The mee pok noodles tasted like your standard coffeeshop noodles. It was coated lightly in sauce, which had a standard salty and slightly spicy flavour. I would have preferred for there to be a little more sauce to coat the noodles as the portion was pretty big.

The fried dumplings were easily my favourite part of the dish. I did not have high expectations for these dumplings, but they impressed me with their delightfully crisp exterior and soft, warm fillings. I had expected for there to be merely minced pork meat within the dumpling, so imagine my happiness to also find prawn meat and chives inside!

The amount of meat served was quite generous, with there being many pieces of pork slices and a fair bit of minced pork. All the elements of the dish came together nicely to add some flavour and textural contrasts to the plain noodles, and made for a comforting noodle dish.

The small bowl of soup served with the noodles was clear and refreshing with a mild salty taste. The addition of fresh veggies in the soup made it even more satisfying to drink.

While Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles’ titular dish did not blow me away, I enjoyed the sheer number of ingredients that were added to the bowl and the large portions made it all the more enjoyable. I wouldn’t travel all the way down to Clarke Quay just to have these, but perhaps I’d dabao the fried dumplings next time.

Next, I decided to try out one of Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles’ non-noodle dishes and settled on the Roasted Pork Rice (S$3.50). I was served a plate with a heaping amount of rice, topped with slices of roasted pork and some cucumbers. Like the Fried Dumpling Minced Meat Noodles, the Roasted Pork Rice came with a side of soup.

The roasted pork was a little on the tougher side, but was still tender enough to chew through easily. The skin of the pork was crispy and overall, the pork wasn’t anything outstanding, but was still pretty good.

The rice, on the other hand, was a little too dry for my liking. However, upon adding more dark soy sauce, it softened up a little. The rice was slightly fragrant, like chicken rice, and wasn’t too oily either. I found this to be a classic plate of Roast Pork Rice.

Taste-wise, the Roast Pork Rice was like any other plate of coffeeshop pork rice. However, it definitely impressed me with its large portion for only S$3.50

Final thoughts

While the dishes served at Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles were satisfying, mainly due to their large portion sizes, I probably wouldn’t travel down just for it. However, I do commend the Fried Dumpling Minced Meat Noodles for its wonderful dumplings and assortment of ingredients.

To any late night dwellers in the Clarke Quay area, if you’re in search of an affordable spot for some good old-fashioned local food, why not give Gao Feng Traditional Teochew Minced Meat Noodles a try?
