Imagine this: it’s 7am and you’re watching the rain pelting down. And all you’re in the mood for is something warm and comforting before you trudge your way into the office. In hopes to feel alive, you tuck into a piping hot bowl of Girl and Mommy Curry Mee. A slurp of the creamy broth brings you back to life. You feel renewed. You’re now ready to take on the world.
And that is exactly how I found myself deep within the industrial area of Chan Sow Lin. Armed with an umbrella, I made my way through puddles and potholes to the Girl and Mommy Curry Mee stall. I was not going to let any kind of downpour halt my journey to one of the most famed curry mee stalls in Kuala Lumpur.
Fun fact, Girl and Mommy Curry Mee is run by 60-something-year-old ‘Mommy’ Madam Loi Yim Peng, and her daughter. They have been running their curry mee joint for almost 20 years and have gained a loyal following from their original location in Chan Sow Lin Food Court to their current location today.
What I tried at Girl and Mommy Curry Mee
I made my way to one of the metal tables and took my seat. On each table is a menu — for those of you may not be in the mood for curry mee, you can try their Tripe and Tendon Soup (RM13), Braised Chicken Feet with Coconut (RM15), Savoury Fish Ball Noodle (RM8) or the Chicken Curry Noodle Soup (RM11).
But I was here for one purpose: the Roast Pork Curry Noodle (RM11). You can ask for your favourite noodles with the curry mee (the stall offers thin bee hoon and yellow noodles). However you’re feeling ravenous, you can go for the larger bowl by topping up an extra RM1. There’s also the intimidating sounding Big Mac Curry Mee Noodle which will cost you a whopping RM23, but I must say the bowl of curry noodles is topped with a mountain of blood cockles. It’s perfect for those who simply can’t get enough of this juicy seafood!
In less than five minutes, my bowl of curry mee arrived at the table. In the centre was a small scoop of blood cockles and strips of crispy roast pork. I have to admit, I felt a twinge of disappointment when I compared the reality of the portion to the picture illustrated on the menu. The image on the menu depicted a more generous serving of cockles and roast pork. Determined not to be let down by the sight, I gave the noodles a healthy toss in its creamy broth, and took a bite.
A sip of Madam Loi’s curry mee concoction is guaranteed to bring the dead back to life. I was treated to a delicious, spicy, coconut milk-infused gravy, blanched yellow wheat noodles, roast pork belly, spongey slivers of rehydrated dried pig skin, fresh blood cockles and tofu puffs.

Those of you who can’t handle the heat will be relieved to know that the broth was not spicy. Instead, it was more creamy, fragrant and packed with flavour. But if you’re like me and enjoy a good dose of spice, a bottle of chilli paste is right there on the side.
I must admit I particularly enjoyed the slices of roast pork. Despite being soaked in the broth, the pork belly crackle still had a decent crunch to it and was on the salty side. My only qualm with the roast pork would be…wishing there was more of it!
The blood cockles were also very fresh as I could still taste the rawness in each juicy bite. I noticed the usual curry mee suspect (aka, long beans) was not present in the bowl. But thankfully, the beancurd puffs had absorbed the delicious curry broth, and each bite of that was relished.
Final thoughts
As I slurped up the last bits of noodles in my bowl, I noticed that even at 8am, the limited tables were full of hungry customers gobbling up their noodles. Do note that due to the small seating capacity, there tends to be a queue at this stall, no matter what time you visit.
Stomach full of curry noodles, I found that Girl and Mommy Curry Mee was certainly the perfect place to warm my spirits on a cold and dreary day. I will be back for more!
