As you squeeze through Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market and Food Centre at lunch hour, you just might notice a garish yellow stall set upon by a leviathan of a queue. The stall in question? Guan Kee Kway Chap, a rapid daily sell-out kway chap spot frequented by lovers of the Teochew dish in Toa Payoh.

According to a Facebook post on the Food We Eat N Share in SG group, it seems Northlanders will soon have the fortune of tasting their popular dishes as well. The stall is reportedly opening another branch at Sembawang Hills Food Centre on 24 Sep.

At the same time, the Toa Payoh outlet will be taking a 1-week break to assist operations at the new location. It’s said the daughter will be at the helm of Guan Kee Kway Chap’s new stall.

Their reputation is in no small part due to their immaculately clean innards that require a painstaking process to purge not just rankness but impurities as well.

Guan Kee Kway Chap‘s remarkably affordable Mini Set at S$3.60 is a well-portioned bowl with every ingredient in the mix for those shying away from a full meal. On the other hand, the 1 person set (S$5.60) is extra generous on the provided platter (Big Intestine, Pork Belly, Pork Skin, Tau Pok, Braised Egg, Fishcake) with a separate bowl for kway teow. The 2-person set  is double the cost at S$11.20.

While this means Toa Payoh residents will be missing their favourite kway chap in this short intermission, it should be no cause for a frenzied rush to queue. After all, it’s just 1 week, right?
