Who said that steamboats were boring? Certainly not at Hotpot Heroes, Singapore’s first martial arts themed hotpot spot located in Tanjong Katong.

Hotpot Heroes 1

When we dropped by, it really felt like we were teleported back to Ancient China, with the red lattice window décor, elaborate serving trays and traditional Chinese trinkets. It really seemed like an old-school Chinese tavern!

If you’re feeling particularly daring, there are even costumes available for customers to wear for a little photo-op before your meal. Grab a hand-painted fan and some traditional garb for some #ootd shots with your loved ones!

Hotpot Heroes has both a la carte and buffet menus.

For buffet menus, Set A is priced at S$27.90++ per pax on weekdays, and S$34.90++ on weekends. The more extensive Set B is priced at S$39.90++ and S$46.90++ per pax respectively. We opted for Set A to assess the quality and range of food available even if you go for the cheaper option here.

I’d say that the range of dishes available even for Set A is passable. Apart from the standard pork, chicken and beef meats available, there are seafood options like Sliced Dory Fish and Short Neck Asari Clam that you can order. This is on top of a pretty standard menu of vegetables, mushrooms and vegetarian items.

If you choose the more expensive Set B option, you’ll get some pretty premium options such as US Black Angus Beef, Iberico Pork Collar, Fish Roe Dumplings with Squid Ink, and their signature 18 Luohan Vegetable Platter amongst other options. It’s great if you want to splurge on a celebratory meal.

There are five soup bases you can choose from here at Hotpot Heroes — Beauty Collagen Broth, Beauty Tomato Broth, Mushroom Broth, Sichuan Spicy Broth and Chong Qing Traditional Spicy Broth.

We went for the Beauty Tomato Broth and Beauty Collagen Broth. The Beauty Tomato Broth stood out as being jam-packed with flavour and was absolutely bursting with tomato umami. I usually don’t drink the leftover soup for hotpot but I couldn’t stop myself from doing so here.

Perhaps this had something to do with the fact that Hotpot Heroes was opened by the same management team as Eel Hotpot, a pretty popular chain in China with over 200 outlets. It’s no surprise that the soup bases here are delicious and tasted quite authentic.

Hotpot Heroes 4

Perhaps my favourite part of the dining experience here was the presentation of the food. The meats dock at your table in an old-school Chinese barge, complete with smoke coming out of the sides.

Hotpot Heroes 12

They give a pretty generous serving of meats, too!

I liked how the pork belly came in fine slices, making it perfect for consumption shabu-shabu style.

Hotpot Heroes 9

The dumplings were exquisite and made really well. Each individual fold of the dumpling wrapper was done to perfection. However, there wasn’t much filling inside the dumpling and this is one area I wish Hotpot Heroes would improve.

I also really liked the meatball platter that came with six different meatballs. Each of them was well-executed — I could tell that they were handmade rather than mass-produced, and I appreciated the extra effort and premium ingredients that elevated the texture and overall taste of the meatballs.

Hotpot Heroes sets itself apart with an unbeatable concept and ambience. It’s only reinforced by the dramatic plating that food is served to you in. You’ll definitely want to have your phone camera ready to snap pictures as your food comes!

Price-wise, I’d say that you’d be getting a rather decent meal at that price point if you go for the Set A hotpot buffet. Set B opens up a whole range of premium items, but at that price tag, you might be better off finding more affordable options.

That being said, I’d love to see the management here find a good middle ground between affordability and range of items available.

I’d definitely want to bring my family and friends here at least once to enjoy the ambience and food, and you should too!
