In these recent 2 or 3 years, it seems that Nanyang-style cuisine is all the craze, gradually taking our F&B scene by storm with brands like Nan Yang Dao and the popular Oriental Kopi from Malaysia. Now adding to that list is Ipoh Station Kopitiam, located on level 4 of Sim Lim Square — IT enthusiasts and those who are shopping for computer stuff, do take note! Ask any Ipoh-born Malaysian, and you’ll know that they’re proud of their food offerings.

Before I even elaborate about the new cafe, let’s clear up what Nanyang cuisine is for those scratching their heads. It’s actually born from the voyages of early settlers, bringing together the comforting tastes of Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan with the bold, aromatic flavours of Malaysia and Indonesia — you could even call it a kind of fusion, if you’d like!

Although its seating capacity isn’t as large as other mainstream Nanyang-style cafes, its vast menu more than makes up for it. If you’re an early riser or usually eat something before work starts, go for the Kaya Butter Toast Bread (S$2.40) or simply get a Breakfast Set (S$5.50) which throws in soft-boiled eggs and coffee as well. For just S$3, you can also enjoy Chee Cheong Fun w/ Mushroom Sauce or Chee Cheong Fun w Sweet Sauce.

And for those who love their cup of Joe in the mornings, you’ll know that Nanyang-style kopis are robust, strong and one of the best around — similar to some of our local kopitiams that brew solid coffee. Sip on Kopi O (S$1.80 for hot, S$2.80 for cold) or Ipoh White Kopi.

For mains, rice lovers can enjoy a plate of Otah Nasi Lemak (S$7.50) or Special Big Chicken Drumstick Nasi Lemak (S$9.80). Ipoh is also known for its curry mee, so whether you’re someone who loves it dry or with gravy, there’s something here to suit your tastes. Slurp on the Ipoh Dry Curry Chicken Noodle (S$5.80), Ipoh Curry Char Siew Crispy Pork Noodle (S$7.50), or Ipoh Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Noodle (S$6.80).

Got a craving while building your new PC? If your stomach starts rumbling while you’re assembling parts at Sim Lim Square, just take a break and head straight up to Level 4 to visit Ipoh Station Kopitiam.
