Any Katong dweller will know of Katsuya, which has been supplying classic tonkatsu to this part of the East for a solid 12 years. 23 Jul 2023 will be their last day at their current location as they make the move to shift to Tanjong Katong.

Whenever I’m craving tonkatsu in Katong, I always somehow end up at Kodawari Katsuya’s doorstep. Although I am devastated, this move is exciting news for Katsuya as they are  upgrading to a much bigger space.

The news was released at the end of May 2023, with a vague announcement on them getting keys to a new place. Only in the comments was there extra information, with the tonkatsu joint mentioning their plans to shift.

On the contrary, many Facebook users seem stoked about their new location in Tanjong Katong. Katsuya’s post was greeted with many congratulations from enthusiastic customers. With so much support, this tonkatsu restaurant will have quite the turnout on its first day in Tanjong Katong.

On that topic, the first day of operations at the new Tanjong Katong outlet is yet to be released. Their new location is 258 Tanjong Katong Road, which is a short distance from their former East Coast Road location.

You will be surprised to know that Katsuya does not use any MSG or lard in their cooking, making the freshness of their meats truly stand out. My go-to order has always been Rosu Tonkatsu Set (S$24), which comes with rice, miso soup, pickled vegetables and cabbage. Eating that deep-fried tender pork with a spoonful of rice has always been pure bliss. I’m drooling just reminiscing about it.

Whenever they decide to open for business once again, you can be sure that hungry lil’ me will be in the crowd. Until then, I’ll miss those crunchy bites of Katsuya’s tonkatsu goodness.
