American casino and resort company Las Vegas Sands held a groundbreaking ceremony for a S$10.3 billion expansion project at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) on Tue, 15 Jul.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong officiated the ceremony. Also present were Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu and company executives — co-founder Miriam Adelson, Chairman and CEO Robert Goldstein and President and COO Patrick Dumont.
The project has been billed as an “ultra-luxurious resort and entertainment destination” that aims to “redefine industry standards further and push boundaries in the realms of luxury tourism, hospitality and entertainment”, said the company in a press statement.
The pioneering project will feature a 570-suite luxury hotel tower. It will be complete with a signature rooftop and dining experiences, luxury retail boutiques, gaming, holistic spa and wellness facilities. It will also have around 200,000 square feet of high-end meeting space.
The project will be completed by 2030, with the opening set for the first quarter of 2031.
Check out these highlights.
1. 76,000-square-foot SkyLoop

Just like how the MBS is synonymous with its iconic ship-like skypark, the new tower will also feature its own unique multi-storey rooftop architectural feature called the SkyLoop.
Spanning 76,000 square feet and offering a 360-degree view of the Singapore skyline, this will be a mix of both public and private spaces. On the lower floor, the Skyloop will offer several points of public access. These include an observatory, restaurants and gardens.
Above, guests can look forward to secluded experiences ranging from private cabanas, infinity pools, and a wellness terrace that is designed for yoga, arts and special events.
2. 15,000-seat state-of-the-art arena

Situated adjacent to the hotel tower will be a podium that will serve as a bustling hotspot for business, entertainment and cultural exchange. At its core is a 15,000-seat state-of-the-art arena designed to host the highest calibre of regional and international touring artists.
The venue will also be integrated with new and current developments within the Marina Bay area for greater efficiency and pedestrian connectivity. This provides direct access to the Bayfront MRT Station and linkways between Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay.
3. Greener operations

In line with MBS’s green strategy, Sands ECO360, sustainability will still be at the heart of the new building’s architecture and operations. Different approaches towards designing shade for guest comfort and reduced energy consumption are currently being explored.
These include a self-shading facade system that utilises high-performance glazing and internal blinds. This will lower direct solar heat transfer while improving energy efficiency. Tree species native to the Southeast Asian region will also be planted where possible.
