Remember the good old days when you would run to the mama diam (provision shop or Mama shop) conveniently located under your HDB block to get yourself a packet of Choki Choki Chocolate or steaming hot curry puffs along with other vintage snacks? Well, we certainly do. Now you can relive that age-old memory and pop by Mama Diam—a retro-influenced speakeasy bar.
If you, like many of us, are a lover of all things vintage, you’d definitely not want to miss embarking on a nostalgic journey of rediscovering Singapore’s cultural heritage located in Prinsep Street with a menu that puts a fun and modern twist on iconic local favourites like their signature Crab Kueh Pie Tee (S$13 for nine pieces), a modern take on the Peranakan tartlets using crab meat with homemade chilli crab sauce and gochujang sauce. There’s also Butter Boxing Chicken (S$13 for six pieces), fried chicken drumlets with chicken tikka masala and Homemade Churros (S$12), crispy churros paired with a mouth-watering caramel kaya dip.
Other specially curated food items include Drunken Chicken Roulade (S$13 for six pieces), Pork Belly Char Siew Tacos (S$13 for three pieces), Stuffed Seafood Lychee (S$14 for eight pieces) and many more!
Food aside, booze lovers we’re looking at you now! You can also enjoy your childhood snacks as garnishes to their unique tea-infused local cocktails like the Pandan Sour (S$16), a Monkey Shoulder whisky with pandan and citrus, or Rosie (S$16), a Hendricks Gin with cultured milk and rose syrup and citrus that comes with the option of Oolong or Lychee Tea. All cocktails from Mama Diam’s Is It Tea You’re Looking For? selection also comes at a very affordable rate of S$28 a pot.
If cocktails aren’t your thing, breeze through the night with their local-inspired Shooters (S$10 per shot, S$48 for six shots) which comes in nostalgic flavours like Milo, Kaya Toast, Sourplum, and Paddle Pop.
If that’s not all, you can also expect an old-school inspired outdoor area featuring HDB stools, vintage knick-knacks and traditional snacks while being served by our favourite uncle clad in a white t-shirt and checkered sarong, the only way we remember him by. So, whether you’re a foodie or cocktail-lover, we know you’ll enjoy reminiscing the good old days at the vintage-esque Mama Diam—guaranteed to bring you back in time with her rustic charm.
