For those crossing into JB regularly, are you running out of places to explore? We checked out NooDuo by KIOKU, which is near the checkpoint and a short drive away from KSL. Located at 13 Jalan Dedap in Taman Melodies, the restaurant has kept its raw, aged facade from its former life as a 20-year-old car workshop.

It almost makes you question whether you’re in the right place. But step through the sliding doors, and the vibe quickly clicks — cool, nostalgic, and unexpectedly fitting. Perhaps that was the intention of husband-and-wife duo Shawn Shum and Sunny Cheong when they opened it 5 months ago. Both of them were working at Restaurant Kioku, a French fine-dining establishment previously.

The space was adorned with wooden furnishings, raw concrete pillars, and a rather high ceiling with natural sunlight streaming in.

We watched Shawn run the kitchen like a seasoned pro, handling multiple tasks at once with precision and a clear, organised rhythm.
The menu centres on handmade artisanal noodles, divided into 3 categories — Hot, Tossed, and Cold Noodles. The noodles are crafted from a blend of French T55 flour, egg yolks, and Italian 00 flour. We ended up getting one of each variety.

The
Pork (RM34) Hot Noodle came with about 5 slices of port wine pork resting snugly on a bed of noodles. It was bathed in a light golden, clear
consommé, crowned with leek and spring onions. The pork was cooked to perfection — tender and melt-in-the-mouth. The broth was on the lighter side, and the angel hair-like noodles had a nice bite to it.
Next up was the Carbonara (RM78) that was complemented by a trio of well-charred pork belly pieces, sliced fresh truffle, egg yolk, and shredded cheese.
We broke the egg yolk and mixed everything together. It was luscious, yet never cloying. As with the pork earlier, the pork belly was cooked flawlessly, with a gentle smokiness from its crisp skin.
My favourite of the 3 was the Raw Negitoro Cold Noodle (RM48), the perfect little remedy for the ridiculously-hot weather outside.
Citrusy with a yuzu-like brightness, the refreshing minced tuna is mixed with chopped shallots for added crunch, pairing perfectly with cold strands of handmade noodles for an invigorating combination, served with a beautiful ramen egg.
We also ordered the Wagyu Beef Cheek (RM88) that’s paired with creamy mashed potato. Each piece of beef cheek was fit for royalty — soft, luxurious, and buttery.
If you have a sweet tooth, the menu also features 4 types of desserts such as the burnt Cheese Cake (RM18). You can also get 350ml Kirin beer cocktails like Tomato (RM36) and Yuzu (RM32) and whisky highballs like Jim Beam (RM28).
Noodle fans who don’t mind splurging a little, swing by NooDuo by KIOKU. I highly recommend the cold noodles and beef cheek.
