To some people, fried chicken might seem sinful and unhealthy. But every now and then, we deserve an indulgent treat. While collecting a birthday cake recently, I chanced upon OMG Fried Chicken at a nearby kopitiam at 560 Macpherson Road.

The sight of the perfectly golden-brown chicken drumsticks and wings was immediately tempting, putting them at the top of my list for a future visit. And… here I am.

On a typical day, the stall deep fries approximately 60kg of chicken wings alone, amounting to about 500 pieces. And that doesn’t include the chicken drumsticks and breasts.

If you’re coming by for dinner, not to worry. The chefs prepare a fresh evening batch to ensure diners never have to settle for chicken that has been languishing since midday.
What I tried at OMG Fried Chicken

The menu here is simple and straightforward. I started off with the 2 Wings 1 Rice (S$5) and was pleasantly surprised that the rice wasn’t white rice, but the flavoured chicken rice variety (yaaas!)

Even before I started tucking in, I caught a whiff of the aromatic pandan leaves. Each grain of the fragrant rice was nicely separated and wasn’t overly oily despite the use of chicken fat to cook it.

The best way to enjoy chicken wings is with your bare hands (anyone violently object?). I was glad they were minimally oily when I held them up. With the first bite, the skin was shatteringly crispy. The flesh remained juicy, and together with the crackly seasoned skin, made for a solid satisfying combination when eaten all at once. My only gripe was the meat’s seasoning, which was a little bland for my liking if I were to eat it on its own.

For those who love pasta, the 2 Wings 1 Spaghetti (S$6.50) is the perfect choice. I lowered my expectations for the spaghetti as this was a kopitiam setting, and wasn’t comparing it to those you can get at Italian restaurants (c’mon, let’s be real).

The strands of pasta were decently cooked — not too soft and almost al dente. Upon taking a closer look at the tomato sauce, I noticed that the chefs actually injected some ‘tender loving care’ into it by adding bits of carrot and onion. It wasn’t just a case of emptying a can straight into the pan — A for effort! The taste was also well balanced, a refreshing change from other establishments that, to me, often veer into overly tart territory.

If the 2 pieces of wings were not shiok enough, OMG Fried Chicken also has 3 Pcs Fried Chicken (S$8) and 5 Pcs Fried Chicken (S$13.80) for extra enjoyment The 3 Pcs Fried Chicken comes with a wing, breast or back, and drumstick or thigh.

Similar to the chicken wings, the drumstick and breast were addictively crispy with tender and moist meat. Once again, I felt that the flesh fell short of seasoning and needed an itsy-bitsy savoury boost.

At the stall front, make sure to help yourself to the tub of homemade chilli sauce. It was delightfully vibrant, limey and gently spicy, perfect for dunking your fried chicken into.

For those who can’t stop munching, you can also get the Chicken Skin (S$3 for 100g), Chicken Popcorn (S$4.80 for 100g), and Chicken Gizzard (S$3 for 100g).
