Come 25 June 2021, Singapore Democratic Party’s Chee Soon Juan will not just be the party’s secretary-general, but also a new cafe owner. Orange & Teal is the brain child of both Chee as well as his wife, Mei. He took to a Facebook post on Monday to announce the opening.

According to Chee, Orang & Teal has been in the works for the past several months now, and will be welcoming its first customers on Friday. The cafe is situated at Rochester Mall, along Rochester Drive, and is somewhere Chee and Mei hope will be comfortable for Singaporeans to gather and have “that heartwarming cuppa”.

Chee hopes that Orange & Teal will be “a place where we get together with our loved ones and friends and get to know each other all over again. A place where intelligent discussion, even impassioned debate, takes place. A place where the conversation’s even better.”

And that very phrase—where the conversation’s even better—is also engraved above the doorway, set to be the cornerstone of Orange & Teal.

While they are currently not officially halal-certified, the cafe does not serve pork, lard, or any pork-related items. However, wine and beer will both be served, albeit in separate glassware.

“To be perfectly honest, I’m not a businessman. I never was and I don’t think I will ever be. But I’ve always wanted to start a social enterprise of sorts to support causes close to my heart. I’ll talk about this including the vision of this venture another day,” writes Chee.

Menu and prices are still unknown at the time of writing, but will be updated in the coming days, assures Chee.

Orange & Teal is about a 5-minute walk from Buona Vista MRT Station, and is open from 11am to 10pm daily.
