Japanese cafe PIPES by HATTENDO announces closure, promises shift to new outlet

Cafes are a distinct aspect of Millennial and Gen-Z culture that I adore, especially Japanese ones. They always exude a unique air that’s unreplicable, from the artisanal architecture to the warm comfort food they serve.

Unfortunately, it’s gotten a bit harder to capture that magic, as PIPES by HATTENDO will be shutting down both their outlets on 31 Dec 2025.

The announcement was shared on the brand’s Facebook page. In the post, Hattendo celebrated its 10th anniversary of operating in Singapore and announced the closure of both its Outram Park and Great World City (GWC) outlets. However, it’s not the end of Hattendo in Singapore.

The brand also promised a reopening at a new location in the near future, while also reassuring patrons that pop-ups and online deliveries will be unaffected by the closure. This is not Hattendo’s first brush with closure. The brand previously had an outlet named HATTENDO Cafe in Tanjong Pagar Centre, but it closed in 2020.

Among Hattendo’s outlets, its Outram Park establishment is definitely the most iconic. It’s a mere stone’s throw away from the MRT station, serving as a cafe by day and as a bar by night. It also features Hattendo’s Roasting Gallery, where patrons can watch a barista brew their coffee right in front of them using an automatic coffee roaster.

Hattendo is known for its incredible sandwiches, otherwise known as Sandos (Japanese sandwiches). They are often characterised by a slab of juicy meat between slices of shokupan (Japanese milk bread). They come in Regular and Small sizes, with the Small option lacking vegetables.

Among the 8 Sandos Hattendo offers, their Hokkaido Wagyu Patty Sando (S$20 for Regular, S$11 for Small) is the most popular. The sandwich is exactly what the name says, serving a fat and juicy piece of wagyu meat accompanied by refreshing vegetables. Their Iberico Katsu Sando (S$22 for Regular, S$12 for Small) is another highlight and my personal favourite.

From now till the end of the year, Hattendo will be offering its Classic Cream Buns at only S$2.80 (U.P. S$3.80) as a throwback to its original price in 2014. They come in 5 flavours — Custard, Whipped Cream, Azuki Beans, Matcha, and Chocolate. This promotion is only valid at its Outram Park outlet.
