Although Sembawang Hills Food Centre has finally reopened after a 3-month long wait, it seems that beloved kway chap store — San Ba Wang Guo Zhi Shu Shi has closed for good.

Sembawang Hills Food Centre had been closed for renovation until 30 Apr 2023. Post renovation, all other stores have continued with business as usual. However, despite them enjoying good business before the closure of the food centre, it seems that they are the exception.

For the unacquainted, San Ba Wang Guo Zhi Shu Shi was a very popular store at Sembawang Hills Food Centre. They offered one of the most affordable options there, with consistently long queues.

Their closing time is 12pm but they used to sell out of large intestines by 10am, just 3 hours after opening.  It was not uncommon to see a small queue already forming before their 7am opening time.

San Ba Wang Guo Zhi Shu Shi gave customers bang for their buck — at only S$3 and $S4 for a bowl of kway chap,  their offerings were extremely affordable but generous. Unlike many kway chap stores, they made use of a lighter and thinner sauce as opposed to the thick, starchy variety.

This made their kway chap a popular option for those who enjoyed the dish but wanted something less heavy. Paired with their smooth kway and gamy but inoffensive offal, it made for a delightfully cheap but filling breakfast option.

It is a shame that this store did not continue operating after Sembawang Hills Food Centre’s renovation. It’s sad that yet another store with decent food at great prices is closing down; let’s hope that more such stores won’t follow suit.
