New in town: Up In Smoke, NEWest — Smoked waffles for a fire dessert

Last Updated: July 16, 2021

Ice cream and waffles have one of the best track records for being an unfailingly delicious combination. I know that the East is famed for having more cafes, bakeries and dessert shops than one could possibly count, but the West might be giving it a run for its money real soon. If you’re a fan of the sugary, syrup-glazed dessert, you’ll definitely have heard of Burnt Cones and the commendable variety of ice cream flavours it offers. Enter Up In Smoke, Burnt Cones’ sister brand that promises to deliver an upgraded version of your perennial dessert choice.

Both brands offer their signature gelato, but Up In Smoke lives up to its name with a focus on their Applewood Smoked Waffle (S$10), which is served topped with Scamorza gelato (S$5), a creamy scoop of smoked cheese ice cream ideal for adventurous diners. The first of its kind here in Singapore, the crispy buttermilk waffles are first smoked in sandalwood before they are served in a bell jar to trap the smoke. All Instagram and TikTok fiends will want to get ready their cameras to document the wafts of smoke before the ice cream and waffles are revealed.

Those hankering after their favourite sweet dessert will definitely be in for an unexpected surprise, given that the taste of the smoked waffles leans towards savoury. The charred, almost bacon-like, taste of the waffle brings an unexpected complexity to an otherwise simple dessert, promising all dessert fiends a unique experience with Up In Smoke. Take your pick from gelato flavours such as Earl Grey (S$5), Black Sesame (S$5), Madagascar Vanilla (S$5) or go for something lighter like a Mango Passion (S$5) or Strawberry Basil (S$5) sorbet to make your dessert extra refreshing.
