The funky interior of Waa Cow! Yakiniku is hard not to notice and there’s an explosion of colours as you step into the space. A fun buzz envelops the atmosphere with its artsy walls and neon signs. Famous for their beef bowls, they’ve now ventured into providing a grill-it-yourself experience in Serangoon, opening its doors on 1 Sep 2022

Waa Cow! Yakiniku - the restaurant

What’s particularly unique about this place is the number of delicious sauce options one has to dip their meat into. The co-founder of Waa Cow! Yakiniku, Mr Aaron Yeo, explained how each sauce has been carefully chosen to cater to different tastes and types of meat. Aside from the two sauces on-the-house, Garlic Butter Teriyaki and Ponzu Negi, there are five others available.

The first of the five I tried was the creamy and spicy Wasabi Mayo (S$0.90). If you’re obsessed with truffles like I am, try the umami-filled Truffle Sauce (S$0.90) that goes great with the Truffle Rice (S$4 A la Carte, +S$2 to upgrade in set). You also can’t go wrong with the Mentaiko Sauce (S$0.90) which my colleague licked clean.

The larger one in the middle is the Sweet Sukiyaki With Raw Egg (S$2.50). The sweet and savoury Japanese sauce is given a raw egg twist. While I wasn’t its biggest fan, it was something different. And now for my favourite of the evening: Spicy Miso & Leek Relish (S$1.90) which was flavourful, spicy, and went well with every meat. I recommend just getting all of them with the Signature All Dips Platter (S$3.90).

Moving on, we were first served the Amaebi Platter (S$21.90) which came on a bed of ice and radish. It had three of everything: Amaebi (sweet shrimp), Hokkaido Scallops (à la carte $12.90 for 5 pcs), and Norwegian Salmon Slices. You can also purchase some regular Salmon (S$9.90 for 5 pcs) individually.

For the meat, there is beef, chicken and pork to choose from. We were given a selection of beef cuts that are sold in portions of 100g and 200g. It included Karubi (S$6.90 for 100g, S$11.90 for 200g), Oyster Blade (S$13.90 for 100g, S$25.90 for 200g) and Ox Tongue (S$18.90 for 100g, S$27.90 for 200g). The platter of pork cuts included a trio of Premium Pork Collar (S$7.90 for 100g), Pork Belly (S$5.90 for 100g), and Japanese Arabiki Pork Sausage (S$6 for 6pcs)

The meat was lean and cooked easily, making for quick and crispy bites to have with the rice. They focus on having affordable options rather than expensive meats, so you can have a hearty meal on a budget. The sauces are a highlight that’s worth placing this restaurant on top of your yakiniku list, and we definitely left with a full stomach.
