Get hit with a wave of nostalgia as the popular old-school eatery, Waffletown, officially opens its doors to the public on 31 May 2022, Tuesday! Their new outlet will be at the first level of NEWest— a shopping mall located at Clementi. If you’re missing their famous fried chicken and waffles, take this piece as your sign to make your way down!
A popular hangout for over 40 years till they closed down in May 2021, the Western-style diner was a local favourite of those who lived or studied around the Balmoral Plaza area, and devastated many when they closed down due to “rental problems”.
I went down to Waffletown last weekend, during their soft launch stage, to get my fried chicken fix, and was surprised that the new outlet was packed despite their limited menu. Interior-wise, nothing much has changed as well!
Let’s get down to (food) business, shall we?
I had to start with the Waffles a la Mode (S$7.20)— a classic waffle topped with strawberry jam, cream, and raspberry ice cream. The waffle was as I remembered it to be— light and fluffy, and oh-so-crispy. The ice cream here is akin to the rectangular block you can get from the traditional scooter-riding, ice cream-selling uncle.
The tartness of the strawberry jam evened out the overall sweetness of the dish and made it easy to go back for more as it wasn’t too cloying.
I also got myself some fried chicken. The 2 Piece Chicken Set (S$9.20) comes with a side of mashed potato, coleslaw, and a drink. One look and anyone can see how perfectly-fried the chickens are.
I popped a piece in my mouth and was greeted with a delightful crispy skin (complete with ASMR-worthy crunch) coupled with the tenderness of the juicy and well-seasoned meat. One thing’s for sure, Waffletown still hasn’t lost their knack for churning out old-school fried chicken. Truth be told, I was in fried chicken heaven. Besides, the chicken was so fragrant, I could smell it from a mile away! How about that, huh.
Honestly, Waffletown holds a special place in my heart and will always remain a top-tier, no-frills joint that whips out hearty and comforting plates of local Western favourites!
