Walking On Sunshine: Fluffy Souffle Pancake + Korean Fusion Dishes At This Insta-Worthy Cafe In Orchard

“I’m walking on sunshine, whoa!” Remember that upbeat song by Katrina & The Waves? Now there’s a beauty and cafe concept with the same name!

At Walking On Sunshine, they provide both beauty services, and also a dining experience in the heart of Singapore. This multi-concept store in Orchard Central is one of the newest and biggest in Singapore.

Opened by Luke Yi and managed by Japanese beauty expert Kazu Kawahara, this hub consists of a cafe, hair and make-up salon, and a barber shop. For those loving boyfriends who are waiting for their girlfriends to beautify themselves, there is also a sofa corner for them to relax.

Once I walked into the store, I felt relaxed and peaceful because the vibrant flowers and vines made me feel like I was in a garden. This picturesque cafe is the perfect backdrop for your next Instagram post!

After finding a cosy spot in the cafe, I was ready to start my food journey. I first tried their most popular dish, the Shrimp and Salmon Salad (S$21.50). Not a fan of salads, I didn’t think I would like the greens in this dish much. However, the slice of avocado toast and the generous amount of sliced avocados caught my eye.

I’m usually quite indifferent to avocados, therefore I was surprised that I enjoyed this avocado toast. Walking on Sunshine mixed their creamy avocado with diced onions and tomatoes, giving the toast extra crunch and flavour.

The lightly-smoked salmon wasn’t too salty, and balanced out the greens. A few vibrant prawns also added a hint of sweetness to the dish. If you’re looking for a flavourful and well-balanced salad, this would be great for you.

Moving on from appetisers, I was excited to start on their mains. I started with Walking on Sunshine’s Seoul Beef Bulgogi (S$21.50). Baked to a crispy brown, the pizza crust was in-between the thickness of thin crust pizza and pan pizza. The pizza toppings included bulgogi beef, onions, pepper, olives and cheese.

I was unsure about what to expect from this dish, as bulgogi is commonly paired with rice instead. However, I was slightly disappointed that it actually just tasted like a normal meat pizza.

Unlike the usual tomato sauce base, this pizza had a layer of barbecue sauce, adding a honeyed flavour to each bite. The crispy pizza crust and chewy bulgogi beef complemented each other well too.

Unfortunately, Walking on Sunshine’s Double Beef Burger (S$18.50) was the most disappointing dish of all. To me, a good burger is determined by the quality of the patty. In this case, we were told that the beef patty was grilled, however, it tasted as if it was steamed. The beef was as soft as the bun, which made for an unsatisfying texture.

Despite the unfortunate situation with the beef patty, the bulgogi mayonnaise saved the burger with its sweet and smoky flavour.

The burgers came with sweet potato chips on the side, and these were both fluffy and crispy. Before I knew it, all the chips on the plate were gone!

My favourite dish from Walking On Sunshine was the Soufflé Pancake (S$23). Made with sweet cream, maple syrup, nuts and mixed fruits, this dessert was sugary and heavenly. As this was my first time trying soufflé, the fluffy and light texture was a pleasant surprise.

The mixed fruits included grapefruits, orange, blueberries and strawberries, which gave a refreshing end to a heavy meal. With the time and skill it took to make this dessert, it’s worth every dollar.

If you’re a big eater, Walking On Sunshine also offers a Buffet Breakfast (S$15 for two hours). For diners who are looking for a drinking spot at night, the cafe serves up free-flow craft beer (S$15 per hour).

If you ever find yourself at Orchard Central, head over to this Insta-worthy cafe to snap a few shots! While you’re at it give Walking on Sunshine’s Soufflé Pancake a try if you’re looking for a hearty dessert in town. However, I’d give the mains a miss.
