Here, we bring to you 10 best dining options to try out when you’re in the area.

1. Pistachio Middle Eastern & Mediterranean Grill (#02-04/05)

Pistachio Middle Eastern & Mediterranean Grill at Wheelock Place is a mouthful to say but every mouthful here is worth the trip. This restaurant combines cuisine with culture and way of life for an immersive adventure to the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Premium quality ingredients are used to make every meal from scratch. Each is prepared and served fresh, minus artificial additives and processed ingredients.

Every popular starter from the region makes an appearance. My favourite, though, is the Lebanese Zater Bread (S$12) with the creamy Hummus (S$8) following not far behind.

The Chef’s Special section features the chef’s signature dishes, prepared with premium ingredients. Splurge on the Tomahawk Beef Steak (S$200) or the Whole Lamb Shoulder (S$148). You’ll need to plan ahead, though— both require a 1-day pre-order. I intend to try the Zarzuela De Mariscos (S$120) soon. This Mediterranean Shellfish Stew is new to the menu.

There is a range of Pasta dishes and Pizzas (all on pide bread). Kunefe (S$24) is my weakness and this is one of the places that does it best.

2. JUJU 津津 (#02-17/17A)

The Hong Kong connection is strong with this one, and so is the celebrity connection. JUJU is just over a year old and first made headlines for being owned by the daughter of HK actor Benz Hui, Charmaine. The place has grown beyond second-hand fame and has built its own dedicated fanbase.

Its quaint decor is part of the charm, sure, but the menu of Hong Kong-style delicious toast, snacks and drinks is the real draw.

The Juju Curry & Egg (Fish Ball/Pork Skin) (S$8.90) comes with Hong Kong Nissin noodles. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, you’re missing out!

Their house-made Hong Kong Char Siu comes à la carte (100g) (S$11.20) and 3 other ways. if you prefer a simpler meal, the Hawaiian Fried Rice (S$8.90) and the Soup Macaroni w/Ham (S$7.90) are nice.

You just have to try the thick toast here. The sweet and simple Butter Condensed Milk Toast (S$4.90) is the cheapest on the menu. But so good!

Freshly baked snacks such as the Egg Tart (S$2.50) and Bolo Bun w/Char Siu (S$5.50) are available from 1 pm. Come early for the Milk Fritters (S$6)— only 20 portions are prepared every day.

3. Gumption Cafe (#02-01)

Australian specialty coffee brand Gumption Coffee landed in Singapore in 2022. Its Wheelock Place outlet serves as a cafe but also sells their proprietary accessories, including kitchen wear and coffee-centric kitchen tools. It has quickly built up a loyal following, much like its sister stores in Australia and the U.S.

When you drink your cup of Gumption, know that you are sharing the exact same experience of aroma and flavour as coffee lovers in a simple coffee store in Marickville, Sydney, another one in the city’s iconic Strand mall, and a third in New York’s Times Square.

Gumption Coffee specialises in 7 different blends, all ethically sourced from sustainable farms around the world. Vegans can enjoy a plant-based alternative that packs just as much of a potent hit as the other items on their menu.

You can have a cuppa at the outlet or get one of their Nespresso-compatible coffee capsules ($9.50 for box of 10).

4. Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe (#03-15)

Over 40 years, Executive Chef Toshio Sawai has honed his skills at the art of Japanese fine dining. Sun with Moon is the culmination of that long journey and you get to reap the rewards. You’ll have to be quick, though, seats are often booked out a week in advance.

It’s worth visiting simply for the Kamameshi (kettle rice). These quaint presentations use only short-grain rice from Japan, cooked in a broth of bonito and kelp. I love the Salmon Belly Teriyaki & Unagi Kamameshi Set (S$29.80). Mixed together with sweet soy sauce and salmon roe, the steamed rice takes on a fragrance and character that compels you to savour every last grain. You can add sides such as Salmon Sashimi 3 pcs (S$3.50), Mini Chawnmushi (S$3) and Kimchi (S$2) to your order. Most diners also get an Iced lemon Tea/Iced Passion Fruit Tea (S$1.50) with their Kamameshi.

Sun with Moon at Wheelock Place has sliced sushi rolls, nigiri sushi, sashimi à la carte, don sets, as well as rice and noodle sets, too.

5. Privé (#01-K1)

I think I have been a fan of Privé for a couple of years now. The whole concept just appeals to me and I have spent many an hour whiling the time away in one of their restaurants, watching the world go (and eat) by.

All-Day Breakfasts here go till 5pm. Top of the pops is the Privé Sausage Muffin (S$13.50). Despite the name, it’s a vegetarian indulgence with a plant-based patty, vegan cheese and vegan mayo. All-day hungry people can add an Extra Patty (S$3.50).

It’s so hard for me to not have laksa wherever it’s available. The Singapore Seafood Laksa (S$18.50) here is chock full of prawns, squid, fish cake, quail eggs, and more. Another irresistible classic is the Hainanese Chicken Rice (S$19.50). You can opt for a vegan alternative to this, too.

Kids get their own menu at Privé, with a 3-Course Set (S$14). Each set comes with a main, a dessert and a drink. There’s even an extensive à la carte kids’ menu.

6. Uya Japanese Unagi Restaurant (#02-15/16)

Yes, our food scene is so diverse and intricate that we have a restaurant that specialises in a very specific type of eel preparation. Uya Japanese Unagi Restaurant is the master of Kansai-style live eel. You can see the live eels yourself, all imported weekly from Japan.

Their signature dish, Hitsumabushi (S$35 for medium, S$48 for large). This is chopped eel served with condiments, broth, soup and pickles. The charcoal-grilled unagi and Niigata rice can be eaten in 1 of 3 different ways. It’s a discovery you must make on your own on your next visit to Wheelock Place.

There are also more common Japanese dishes for those less adventurous. The Sashimi Rice Bowl (S$29) comes with appetiser, soup and pickles. Add Sea Urchin (S$15) and Fatty Tuna (S$12) for a robust and very filling meal. They have a Kid’s Tempura Set (S$10) that comes with a sushi roll, jelly, and apple or orange juice.

7. Nam Nam (#B2-02)

Nam Nam is a cute name, incorporating a reference to Vietnam and the kid’s way of referring to tasty food. Their philosophy goes much deeper— they are all about creating food that can be prepared quickly, is affordable for the masses, and can be created through sustainable means.

Available from 10am to 2 pm, their Lunch Sets (S$13.90) are amazing value— perfect to a quick breather and re-energiser between bouts of shopping at Orchard.

Each set comes with green papaya salad, dried prawns, peanuts, and crispy shallots. Then, there is your choice of your pho, either chicken slices or Australian beef steak slices. You also get Viet Black Coffee (hot or iced), Viet Coffee with Condensed Milk (hot or iced), Lotus Tea (hot or iced) or Alkaline Water. Vegetarians can have a special pho created just for them on request.

There are 6 banh mi choices, ranging from Bánh Mì Chay (S$11.90) of lemongrass tofu, fried egg and braised mushrooms to Bánh Mì Thịt Ba Rọi (S$13.90) of caramelised 5-spice pork belly. Nam Nam adds no MSG to its Vietnamese pho and banh mi.

8. The Humble Pie & The Ugly Cake Shop (#02-01A)

A very unassuming but unique name may draw you in to The Humble Pie & The Ugly Cake Shop but the great food and drink will keep you returning.

Between the pie and the cakes, this restaurant has a little bit of almost everything to keep you happy. I usually start off with the C.A.T Salad (S$21.90) but share it so I can make place for more wonders from the kitchen. The Creamy Chicken Pasta S$$23.90) is a safe crowd pleaser if you want to dip your toes in slowly.

Other popular items include the Irish Beef Pie (S$23.90), Beef Lasagna (S$23.90), Cottage Pie – Beef (S$23.90) and the Lamb Shank Curry (S$39.90 – S$89.90). I have yet to try the Greek Yogurt Roast Chicken (S$49.90) or the Lasagna – Mixed Mushroom (S$23.90) but they are next on my list after I saw a neighbouring table order them.

You have to try the Basque Burnt Cheesecake 9″ (S$109) if you love a dramatically tasty dose of sweetness. If you’re being a bit more careful with calories, the Classic Cheese & Pepperoni JUMBO Scones (S$36) is a nice consolation.

9. Kei Kaisendon (#B1-05A)

Kei Kaisendon has seen massive demand for its dons and sashimi (kaisen), all of which are made from fresh fish flown directly from Japan. Their Wheelock Place outlet is one of the 19 outlets in Singapore that have opened in the past 6 years.

As the name suggests, the signature specialty here is the Kaisendon. Every kaisendon bowl is topped with fresh sashimi that can be eaten in 4 different ways. The first 2 are when you mix them with Kei Kaisendon’s in-house chilli powder or mayonnaise. Thirdly, you can mix them with their special Sakurai Chicken Soup. The last, which is my favourite, is to wrap the sashimi with their special nori seaweed.

There are 19 varieties of Kiasendon altogether to choose from. If you are new, the Kei Signature Kaisendon (S$14.90++, S$18.90++, S$22.90++) serves as a safe and delicious introduction. I love the Salmon Kaisendon (S$19.90) as the salmon is so good.

Add-ons such as Onsen Egg (S$1.90++), Sesame Tofu (S$3.90++) and Gyoza (S$3.90++, S$6.90++) make for a filling meal of assorted but complementary flavours. There are Add-On Sets, too. Set D (S$3.90++) gets you 2 chicken drumlet pieces and Japanese green tea. Set G (S$5.90++) comes with Ikura Seafood Chawanmushi and Japanese green tea.

10. The Zall Bookstore Cafe (#01-02/#02-18)

This is no ordinary cafe! The Zall Bookstore Cafe at Wheelock Place makes the list simply for being an immaculately wonderful place to read and eat at once. There is a serenity here, made all the more real and palpable for the wonderful decor. Books are one of the few things I love more than food and this place allows me to indulge my full of both.

The premises are spread across two floors and there is an art gallery in there, too! Discoveries galore, each one better than the last. Much of my love for this place is a direct result of the ambience rather than the food specifically. Don’t get me wrong— there is no major shortcoming in the cafe. Rather, the menu is an elevated version of regular fare. There are teas and coffees, cakes and pastries.

Think of it as a much better version of Starbucks and with a much more enticing vibe.
