I often frequent Beauty World for its good food, particularly the stretch of eateries along Chun Tin Road, and when I heard of a new fried chicken shop opening in Beauty World Food Centre named Xiang Xiang Ji, I just had to make a trip down to check it out for myself.

Located near the back of Beauty World Food Centre, Xiang Xiang Ji sports a bright orange sign with a large chicken, making very clear what they sell.
What to order at Xiang Xiang Ji

When we arrived at the stall, we were spoiled for choice as they had many different sets, such as the Combi Set (S$9.90 for rice, S$10.90 for fries) and their Chicken Leg Bites Set (S$9.90 for rice, S$10.90 for fries).
We asked for recommendations, and the staff suggested the Chicken Boneless Set (S$10.80) and the Triple Wings Set (S$9.90). There was a slight wait for the Triple Wings Set, and the staff clarified that all their chicken is fried upon order, and not simply mass-fried and left to cool.
We opted for the Xiang Xiang Chicken Rice to pair with the Chicken Boneless Leg Set, which also came with a drink and a sauce, and we selected their cheese dip.
As we were chatting, the lady boss shared with us that they convey instructions to the central kitchen about marinating the chicken before it is sent to Xiang Xiang Ji, where the chicken is then fried to order. What is unique is that Xiang Xiang Ji is considered heritage food, as the recipe was passed down from the lady boss’s grandmother.

What surprised me the most was that they did not use regular white rice, but rather short-grain rice, which was infused with spices to give it that fragrant smell and flavourful taste.

Next, we moved on to the Triple Wings Set, opting for the fries and spicy mayo. We found that their chicken wings were bigger compared to the normal ones, and that they were crunchy.
While I’m not the biggest fan of wings (why would you pay to have bones in your chicken), my dining companions found that the meat melted in their mouths and was rather crispy as well. The meat was moist and succulent on the inside.

The sauces we paired with our fries were the cheese dip and the spicy mayo. We learnt from the lady boss that the spicy mayo is hand-made using her husband’s grandmother’s recipe, blending many spices to give that fiery kick to pair with the fries.
Who is Xiang Xiang Ji best for
It is definitely best for those who crave fried chicken but want it without the grease and oil. Their ultimate combo sets are definitely suited for students or for anyone on a budget. Xiang Xiang Ji is also best for those who want to try authentic heritage fried chicken.
How to get there?
Xiang Xiang Ji is located along Upper Bukit Timah Road. The nearest MRT station is Beauty World (DT5), and you should take Exit A for the shortest route. Alternatively, you can take a bus and alight at this bus stop: Beauty World Stn Exit A.
