When I was younger, I always made it a habit to purchase a bowl of hot porridge at the nearby hawker center every morning. The simple but fulfilling comfort dish never failed to give me a good jump start for the day. When I noticed that there had been a lot of buzz on social media surrounding breakfast hawker stall Zhu Jiao Shu Shi, it immediately piqued my interest.
An old-school hawker stall located at Tekka Centre, Zhu Jiao Shu Shi is run by an elderly couple. Since the 1980s, they’ve made it a point to consistently churn out delectable breakfast delights over the years. Besides that, they have also kept their prices low even through the ever-changing times and inflation.
Each Zhu Jiao Shu Shi dish will not set you back more than S$1.70. Additionally, you can customise them with the various toppings that they offer, at an extra cost.
If you’re looking for a hearty breakfast, you won’t go wrong with its Economical Bee Hoon (S$1.20). That being said, the star of the Zhu Jiao Shu Shi show would undoubtedly be their Peanut Porridge (S$1).
In exchange for just one golden coin, you can get a flavourful bowl of porridge filled with swimming ingredients. You can also expect toppings like spring onions, fried shallots, and sliced fishcake. Keep a lookout for the mini scallops floating about— those inject extra flavour into the porridge as well. Who said porridge dishes are always boring?
Their peanut porridge does not take all the spotlight though, as their Glutinous Rice (S$1.50) has also won the hearts of many. This dish is completely house-made, paired with shallots, boiled peanuts, and their iconic sambal chilli.
Alternatively, Zhu Jiao Shu Shi also offers Chee Cheong Fun at S$1. Do bring along sufficient stomach space as their portions are huge!
