We Singaporeans love looking for cheap and good food, so here’s some good news. This year, Singapore Food Festival is once again bringing back The 50 Cents Fest!

The event will take place at Chinatown Food Street on 27 & 28 July 2019, with over 40 vendors and stalls. With so many traditional local delights to offer, this year’s theme will focus on old-school Hokkien goodies, including Ngoh Hiang, Kan Chia Mee (rickshaw noodles), Yo Zhau Heh (herbal prawns) and more.

This long-established snack derived its name from the Chinese five-spice powder (五香 ‘Wu Xiang’ – Ngoh Hiang is the literal Hokkien translation).

Who doesn’t love fragrant and crispy Ngoh Hiang? Served on skewers, this deep-fried snack is perfect for eating on the go.

If you want something more substantial, slurp up some Cha Hok Kian Mee (fried black Hokkien noodle). A good amount of dark soy sauce is usually added for this dish to obtain its earthy colour as well as its piquant flavour.

After walking around the food festival and filling your belly with good food, cool off with an icy Sng Bao (traditional ice bag) or two.

These sweet treats were more popular in the 1970s but it’s still gaining traction at these traditional food fairs due to our tropical heat.

The young ones can get a taste of some of these nostalgic foods, while those from the older generation can relive their childhood memories as they savour the dishes. Make sure to bring your Ah Mas and Ah Gongs or even your whole family, and eat to your heart’s content at The 50 Cents Fest 2019.

Save the date for a trip down memory lane!

Dates & Times: 27 & 28 July, 11am to 11pm

Prices: Free admission (food from S$0.50 onwards)
