Love mala and also fried chicken? Then make your way to the nearest KFC Singapore outlet!
The popular fried chicken chain has just rolled out an all-new Mala Chicken (S$8.95 for 2pc meal, S$19.95 for 5pc meal, S$39.95 for 9pc meal) now available at all KFC outlets.
To achieve the numbing sensation that mala is infamous for, KFC came up with their very own Szechuan mala sauce. This concoction definitely seemed legit, because it gave the fried chicken a devilish reddish-brown hue.
I could smell the distinct sharp scent of peppercorn when I held up a piece. There were even many specks of peppercorn and chilli flakes on the chicken skin!
At this point, I already knew what was coming. But the aroma of all the different spices together was simply irresistible. I took a huge bite which, in hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have done.
Nevertheless, the signature crunch from the chicken skin was still delightful. It didn’t take long for the mala to sink in and start spreading its burning effect across my tongue.
Even though it packed an overwhelming punch of heat, the numbing peppercorn went very well with the savoury spices. The balance between the numbness and spiciness was also perfect.
It definitely reminded me of a numbing mala hotpot, except with an additional layer of peppery fragrance.
If you’re a die-hard mala fan, KFC’s mouthwatering but also mouth-numbing Mala Chicken will definitely impress you.
