If there’s one thing we should thank Singapore’s constantly sweltering weather for, it’s the abundance of gelato shops that are popping up all over Singapore. But with a new gelato store opening up every other week, the monotony does set in quite quickly. Do I really want another double scoop of Biscoff and Pistachio on waffles?

Thankfully, Dimanche 49 at Bukit Timah breaks the mould of your typical gelato cups, by providing a spin of deconstructed desserts. While they first started as a home-based business—much like many hot new openings such as Sourbombe—they decided to set up a brick-and-mortar in April 2021.

Whilst artisan gelato is their main bread and butter, it’s really the way Dimanche 49 presents their gelato that sets it apart from everyone else. Each cup of dessert sets you back S$7, and you can pick from gelato flavours including Tiramisu, Wild Strawberries, Black Forest, and Praline.

Every scoop of their homemade gelato comes with a preset combination of toppings to complete the “dessert”.

For example, Tiramisu’s burnt coffee gelato is accompanied by an array of mascarpone, cocoa powder, and Kahlua. Then it’s capped with a ladyfinger to make it pretty much a real tiramisu. Fruit ice cream lovers could also go for the Wild Strawberries, topped with mascarpone, dried strawberries, sponge, and crumble for an interesting mix of textures. Dimanche 49 operates out of a small takeaway kiosk, so those who aren’t a fan of finding makeshift chairs or standing to eat their ice cream can also get Pints (S$17) to go.

Each pint comes with the same toppings, all piled up generously onto the gelato base, which lets you DIY your own gorgeous cup of dessert at home if you’re feeling creative.
