Good news for hawker lovers! Four new hawker centres around the island are finally set to be unveiled in the third quarter of this year.

This includes Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre in Canberra and Fernvale Hawker Centre and Market in Sengkang. Besides, new hawker centres in Senja and One Punggol will also open in the third quarter of 2022.

Also, keep an eye out for the return of Margaret Drive Hawker Centre. The building was previously demolished in 2011 and it will be reopening in the fourth quarter of 2022. A popular haunt in the past, it will now replace the current hawker centre at Blocks 1A, 2A, and 3A Commonwealth Drive.

Furthermore, Market Street Hawker Centre will be relocated permanently to the new CapitaSpring building right next to Raffles Place MRT Station. The 33-year-old food centre was formerly located at Golden Shoe Carpark. It was previously shuttered in 2017 and replaced by an interim one at Cross Street.

No matter where it was located, the place was always packed during meal times. Many enjoyed crowd favourites such as Ah Liang Ipoh Hor Fun, Johnson Western Food and Wei Nan Wang Lor Mee. Thankfully, you will only have to wait until 1 April 2022 to dine there once again. While we do not know whether these stalls would be resuming their operations at the refurbished locations, we sure hope to see them there!

There is still more to look forward to in the coming years, as five more new food centres will be built. We know that all of them will incorporate sustainability features like solar panels and waste digesters. More information will be revealed soon— so stay excited and hungry!
