The well-loved Bugis Street Food has officially closed down for renovations, and took the Internet world by storm this weekend. Located within the popular street market at Bugis Street, it has been a hot spot for many over the years, leaving many to reminisce over popular dishes like the stinky tofu.

The update was shared by a Facebook user, Teochew Alex, on 1 April 2022, on a Facebook group called Can Eat! Hawker Food. As expected, many were upset with the news, while a few sceptics commented that it could be an April Fool’s joke in conjunction with the date it was posted on.

A quick chat with 堡大人 Mr. Burger via Facebook revealed that the information is indeed correct and not an April Fool’s joke. 堡大人 Mr. Burger, who ran a food stall at Bugis Street selling an array of burgers, Chinese sausages and snacks, also shared that the renovation will last around seven months and he’s currently looking for a new stall around the area to continue his business.

While it is unsure if the closure was abrupt or not, many Facebook users also shared images of the relocation of other stalls within Bugis Street Food in the comment section of the original post. Apparently, the popular 老涂记 also put up a notice on their stall beforehand stating that they’ve shifted back to their Jalan Besar branch after 31 March 2022.

The temporary closure also left many wondering if the popular stalls will head back once the renovation is complete. The uncertainty remains and many are closely following the individual stalls’ Facebook pages to get more information from the respective stall owners.

We’re looking forward to seeing how Bugis Street Food will look after its renovation!
