Indonesian food has often been relegated to these few following dishes: mee bakso, nasi ayam penyet and even the mukbang-friendly instant noodles, Indomie. However, Samrang, which recently opened on the 3 Dec 2022 at 743 North Bridge Road, invites you to taste a side of Indonesian cuisine that you might not be familiar with.
Samrang initially starting out as a home-based business in 2020 selling bottled sambals, but in 2021, they eventually went on to sell cuisines inspired by the Indonesian province of Semarang at Smart City Kitchen, with its dishes primarily involving glazed beef ribs and chicken.
One of its most talked about dishes is the Samrang Iga Bakar (Beef Ribs) with Rice Set (S$36.90). It features slow-cooked Samrang style beef ribs with their signature Samrang glaze, fried tofu, rice and Karedok Set (Indo Salad) and a choice of their homemade sambal.
You can also opt for the familiar Indomie as your carbs with the Samrang Iga Bakar (Beef Ribs) with Indo Mee Set (S$38.90).
If you prefer something more collagen-rich, you can go for the Samrang Kikil Bakar (Beef Tendon) with Rice Set (S$22.90), which has braised tender beef tendons that are similarly slow-cooked Samrang style. The Indomie variation, Samrang Kikil Bakar (Beef Tendon) with Indo Mee Set, is S$22.90.
Chicken lovers should try the Samrang Glazed Chicken with Rice Set (S$14.90) which includes an oven-baked jumbo quarter chicken leg that has also been coated with the signature Samrang glaze. This dish also comes in the Indomie variation for S$16.90.
There are also traditional desserts such as Lumpia Pisang (Banana Spring Roll) (S$11.90) which is deep fried banana spring roll with toppings such as Nutella Biscoff and even Sambal Kecap (S$10.90). Why not take a piece of Semrang with you with a Bottled Sambal Semarang (S$6/S$10) with flavours like Original, Geprek and Ijo.
I’m not sure about you, but it’s time our palates experience more of what Indonesian cuisines have to offer, apart from the usual nasi goreng and ayam penyet!
