My first visit to Matsuya in Sapporo, Hokkaido, in 2019 was an unforgettable one. Just outside the entrance, my phone flashed an earthquake alert, and seconds later, the ground began shaking furiously beneath my feet. While the locals barely batted an eyelid, I froze in shock.
Thankfully, the piping-hot beef rice bowl waiting for me soon brought me back to my senses. Who knew that 7 years later, I’d be reunited with Matsuya, this time at Suntec City’s basement in Singapore?

Located directly opposite Fish & Co., the eatery features self-service booths and spacious seating. The menu offerings mimic the ones you’ll find in Japan — an assortment of rice bowls including Unagi and Japanese curry.

Of course, we had to give the classic Gyumeshi Beef Bowl (S$5.50 for small) a try. There are also other sizes available – – – from Medium (S$5.90) to Double (S$10.90). Savoury and tasty, the thin beef slices went well with the sweet onions and rice. Compared to its competitors, the beef at Matsuya offered a meatier bite with a leaner ratio of fat. We also added a Soft-Boiled Egg (+S$1.50) for maximum indulgence. Trust me, its worth it!

Our favourite was the Gyumeshi topped w/ Green Onion & Mentaiko Mayonnaise (S$8.50 for small). Don’t be fooled by the intimidating sight of the green onion; it actually works! The combination of spring onions, creamy mentaiko, beef slices,  and seaweed had multi layers of flavour that danced in my mouth.

We also tried the Soft Boiled Egg & Hamburg Steak with Tomato Sauce Set (S$13.50) which is known to be very popular in Japan. The meat was juicy and hearty, pairing perfectly with the tomato sauce and runny egg. The set comes with rice, miso soup, and a salad with mashed potato. To switch up the flavour, you can help yourself to the condiments on the table: Ponzu Citrus Sauce, Garlic Flavoured BBQ Sauce, Sesame Sauce, and more!
Come savour 60 years of hard work and dedication at Matsuya. For the best experience, we recommend ordering one variety of beef bowl each to share amongst your dining party.
