When it comes to Middle Eastern cuisine in Malaysia, I think most of us have a certain picture in mind: something heavily spiced, flavourful, colourful, and, most importantly, made for sharing. At Mezze Mazi, a cosy neighbourhood pork-free eatery in Ara Damansara, the concept of sharing plates is the main focus.

Specialising in Levantine cuisine, this little eatery is tucked among several other dining spots in the neighbourhood. Its interior makes it a nice place to settle down for a meal with friends and loved ones, without anything feeling too formal or stuffy.
What to order at Mezze Mazi
Despite having just a single sheet of menu printed on both sides, it still took us quite a while to decide what to order. We eventually settled on Hummus (RM25) with Flatbread (RM10), Maroulosalata (RM18), Spring Chicken (RM29 for half), Falafel (RM15), and a glass of Sparkling House Lemonade (RM15).
Hummus is easily one of my favourite dips of all time. I’m talking top-tier, keep-thinking-about-it-after-the-meal kind of favourite. A really good bowl of hummus can occupy my thoughts for an embarrassingly long time, so I was particularly keen to try theirs.

Mezze Mazi’s version looked incredibly inviting, with thick, smooth chickpea hummus topped with tarator, whole boiled chickpeas, green and black olives, homemade pickles, red onions, za’atar, and olive oil. I liked how the flavours stayed true to the main ingredients, allowing the chickpeas and tarator to shine instead of relying too heavily on spices, smokiness, or other additions. The pickles were a particularly nice touch, adding a little tanginess to each bite.

My only complaint was the flatbread. Despite being freshly made, it was surprisingly tough. Having made more flatbreads than I can count, especially for large family gatherings, I’d say the dough measurements could use a little tweaking. It’s a shame because the hummus itself was lovely, and a softer flatbread would have made the pairing so much better.

The Maroulosalata is a simple salad made with crunchy lettuce, mint, Akkawi cheese, za’atar, and a dressing of lemon, olive oil, and honey. Nothing particularly complicated, but I found myself reaching for it more than expected. Akkawi is also a good choice here, especially if you enjoy feta but aren’t particularly fond of its stronger, richer taste.

I have to give Mezze Mazi’s Spring Chicken a special trophy of some sort. Served as sliced portions of a half chicken, including the leg, breast, and wing, it comes with charred skin, coriander hot sauce, and toum. Frankly, this chicken is stuff dreams are made of. If you’ve ever struggled to find properly juicy roasted chicken, you might want to give this a try.

The chicken is brined so well that even the breast meat is incredibly tender and juicy, almost tasting like your usual thigh meat. The coriander hot sauce has a pretty serious kick, so those with a lower spice tolerance might want to take it easy. The toum, meanwhile, is creamy without being too rich, although I would’ve liked a stronger garlic flavour.

Falafel is another dish I tend to approach with caution when dining out in Malaysia. It’s frustratingly easy to get wrong, but Mezze Mazi does a good job of getting the basics right.
Cutting into one, I was genuinely pleased to find a vibrant green interior instead of the muddy brown centre I’ve encountered at other places. The chickpea and parsley mixture was flavourful, soft and crumbly inside, with a crunchy exterior that wasn’t tough or overly dry. Served with toum, these were seriously good.

The Sparkling House Lemonade was refreshing, with a pronounced lemon flavour and a subtle hint of herbs. A nice drink to have alongside the meal.
Who is Mezze Mazi best for?
The sharing-style menu makes it a good choice for dates, family meals, or catching up with friends. I’d recommend coming with a few people so you can order several dishes and have a taste of everything.
How to get to Mezze Mazi?
Getting here is easiest by car, as public transport isn’t particularly convenient. Parking can also be a bit of a nightmare, so do factor in some extra time to find a spot.
Do we recommend Mezze Mazi?

Yes! I’d happily return for the spring chicken and falafel, and that’s saying something when I usually have a hard time deciding what to order on a second visit. The flatbread could do with some improvement, but the hummus is enjoyable and the chicken is genuinely worth coming back for. If you’re in Ara Damansara and feel like something deliciously comforting, Mezze Mazi is worth adding to your list.
