Goldleaf Restaurant will be shifting out of Katong Square on 19 Sep 2022. In a post on Instagram, they explained that an agreement on the terms of the new lease couldn’t be reached with the landlord. As such, they are currently in the midst of looking for a new location.
Though they only lasted six years at Katong Square, Goldleaf Restaurant has actually been in service since 1971, with its first restaurant being located at Orchard Road. They specialise in old-school family-style Chinese cuisine and are known for their free-flow Taiwanese porridge.
Despite the uncertainty of its new location, Goldleaf Restaurant’s moving out announcement saw plenty of support from netizens, with many commenting that they’ll be dropping by Katong Square for one last meal before it moves out on 19 Sep. Others looked forward to seeing where Goldleaf Restaurant will be moving to next.
When we dropped by its then-outlet at Amoy Street for a meal, we loved how all of its dishes managed to bring out the comforting flavors of home-cooked Chinese food.
A highly recommended dish was the Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables (S$22.90). The pieces of pork were tender and very juicy, and came with a generous serving of herbal sauce. This dish is one of the restaurant’s most cherished dishes as it has been cooked and served since 1971.
Another dish from its history books is the Goldleaf Prawn Rolls (S$12.90). The recipe has been around for over 70 years. We enjoyed the balance of textures; the skin was crispy on the outside, while the filling was soft and had bits of water chestnut mixed with prawn.
Diners should be glad that the closure is but a temporary one, as losing Goldleaf Restaurant is akin to losing a piece of Singapore’s culinary history.
