If you’re an avid follower of Singapore’s hawker scene or a wanton mee lover, the name Koung’s Wan Tan Mee should instantly ring a bell.

The popular wanton mee stall underwent a temporary closure in Dec 2023 to ready itself for a relocation. If you’ve missed their fare, you’ll be delighted to hear that the stall is now back in action at the Blk 121 Geylang East Central coffeeshop!

Koung’s Wan Tan Mee first announced their 13 Feb 2024 reopening on their Facebook page on 30 Dec 2023. However, due to operational difficulties, it was pushed back a day to 14 Feb.

The comeback was clearly a welcome one, with the stall drawing queues on its first days back. According to comments on the Ho Jiak Hawker & Restaurant Food Facebook page, the stall owners had to give out number tags for queue management purposes.

Koung's Wan Tan Mee - Wanton Mee

Koung’s Wan Tan Mee has been a mainstay of the Geylang area since the 1950s, with its owner, Mr Koung, first selling noodles from a humble pushcart.

It became a full-fledged business in 1964, and has been dishing out bowls of delicious wanton mee ever since. It’s well-noted for its handmade wantons and old-school charcoal oven-grilled char siew.

Priced at an affordable S$5, their wanton mee surely isn’t to be missed!

In case you never heard, the stall was on the verge of permanent closure in Aug 2023. This was in light of Mr Koung’s old age and initial inability to source a new spot for the business with the impending closure of the original Sims Ave coffeeshop that housed it.

Mr Koung has harboured hopes for the longevity of his brand and recipe so that his wanton mee can be tasted by generations to come.

Likewise, we’re relieved and eager to see Koung’s Wan Tan Mee back and hope that they’ll stick around for a long time.
