Another market revamp is just around the corner. Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre will be undergoing a 3-month renovation and closed to the public from 14 Apr to 13 Jul.
The National Environment Agency’s (NEA) official notice states that the repairs and redecorations (R&R) will involve replacing tables and stools, installing anti-skid waterproof features in the carpark and enhancing the greenery in the courtyard.

We contacted one of the hawker stall tenants from Ali Corner for their thoughts on the market’s closure. While they are aware that the Tiong Bahru Market renovation will involve R&R, they aren’t sure about what else is in store. During this period, they will be taking the chance to spend some quality time with their family. However, it will be difficult to find a source of income since they won’t be able to operate their stall.
The last revamp the Market underwent was 8 years ago in 2017, when it was upgraded with bigger fans and the addition of sunshades. Its earliest renovation happened 11 years prior in 2006.

Established as Seng Poh Road Market in 1951, the original building was constructed to replace the old shophouses in the area. It also gave the many street hawkers working in Tiong Bahru a permanent location. It came to serve as a market and “town hall” for the residents of the neighbourhood, many of whom had relocated from Chinatown.
It was renamed Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre after a lengthy renovation process that lasted from 2004 to 2006. The two-storey structure was built with bigger stalls and upgraded features such as escalators and lifts. The first floor consisted of over 250 retail and wet market stalls while the second served as the food centre with 83 cooked food hawker stalls.
Who else is ready to see what Tiong Bahru Market’s renovation holds in store this time? See you in July!
