Miss Saigon: 24/7 Vietnamese-owned eatery in Orchard Plaza with authentic dishes, ultra-loaded banh mi

Shops and eateries that open for 24 hours daily are lifesavers, especially if you’re one who typically spends a large amount of time out and about in the wee hours of the night. If you ever find yourself venturing around the Orchard area at 4am, Miss Saigon is an eatery for you to check out.

Miss Saigon - storefront

Miss Saigon is a small 24/7 Vietnamese eatery located on the 2nd floor of Orchard Plaza, and was opened by the founder of the highly popular Bánh Mì Saigon in Ang Mo Kio. If you’re a fan of Bánh Mì Saigon’s Vietnamese sandwiches, you’ll be delighted to hear that you can also get them at Miss Saigon!

Other than its bánh mì, Miss Saigon sells a range of other authentic dishes, including phở and bún chả.

As the shop only has a few seats squeezed into its tiny space, take note that you may not be guaranteed a seat. The eatery’s popularity also means that it is often packed with people waiting to place their orders, so if you’re looking to have a sit-down meal inside, it is best to visit during non-peak hours.

What I tried at Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon - banh mi

Despite its popularity, I never actually got the chance to try any of Bánh Mì Saigon’s famed sandwiches. Hence, I was excited to start my meal at Miss Saigon with Bánh Mì Truyền Thống (S$8.90), also named Traditional Bread in English.

The baguette was filled generously with slices of mixed ham, as well as bits of refreshing veggies. I opted to add an egg to the dish, which costed an extra S$2.

It was hard to bite into the bánh mì, given how thick and voluminous it was. I found the generosity of the ingredients to be super commendable! The ham slices were a little firm, yet soft enough for my teeth to sink into. The baguette itself was super crisp on the outside, yet still fluffy on the inside. I definitely did not regret adding the egg, as it had a nice jammy centre and helped to elevate the textures of the bánh mì.

Miss Saigon’s Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng (S$8.90) was equally as impressive as the former. This sandwich was filled to the brim with grilled BBQ pork — I loved how liberal they were with their meat fillings!

Every bite of the Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng was substantiated with a huge chunk of the sweet and chewy pork. The veggies within were tangy, crunchy and fresh, and each element of the bánh mì came together wonderfully to create a satisfying and tasty dish. The intense flavours of the pork made it a little jelak after a while, though, due to its saltiness. However, the portions of the meat made this dish well worth the price.

Miss Saigon - chicken pho

My favourite Vietnamese dish of all time is phở, so I was excited to try Miss Saigon’s Phở Gà (S$12).

The dish came with a good amount of chopped chicken pieces, including meat, bones and skin. The chicken meat was a tad dry for my liking, unfortunately, but it was still flavourful from being soaked in the broth.

The phở as a whole was quite delicious, as the broth was fragrant and bright with a comforting aroma. The rice noodles were cooked nicely, and the dish as a whole satisfied my phở cravings. However, at S$12, I felt that you could get larger portions from sit-down restaurants. I probably wouldn’t come to Miss Saigon again for their phở.

Miss Saigon - bun ga quay

Miss Saigon’s Bún Gà Quay (S$9.90) was the most visually pleasing dish, in my opinion. This large dish contained fine rice noodles, salt-baked roast chicken and fresh vegetables. It reminded me of a salad, with the amount of greens that were inside.

The salt-baked chicken was packed with flavour, and was also really tender! The saltiness of the meat was balanced out nicely by the noodles and the fresh veggies, and adding in the tub of sweet & sour sauce made it even more tantalising.

Bún Gà Quay is the perfect dish for those seeking a healthy yet delicious alternative.

Miss Saigon - spring rolls

Finally, I gave the Chả Giò (S$9.90) a go. The dish consisted of 5 fried spring rolls filled with meat, vegetables and mushrooms.

Each spring roll was crispy on the outside yet soft and hot within. The taste of the spring rolls reminded me a little of ngoh hiang with its savoury flavours and slightly mushy texture. I did find this side dish a tad pricey, though.

Final thoughts

Miss Saigon - dishes

I was pretty impressed by Miss Saigon’s dishes. The generosity of the portions and fillings were outstanding, and I enjoyed every dish that I tried. The accessibility of its location also makes it a convenient spot to visit regularly. I’d highly recommend getting their bánh mì or rice noodle dishes, which were large in portions yet affordably priced.

I will definitely return to Miss Saigon in the future!
