Ever wondered how food packaging might have looked back in your parents’ or grandparents’ day? Have you ever asked yourself about the history of familiar and iconic local food brands? Well, wait no more!
The National Museum of Singapore’s latest exhibition, Packaging Matters: Singapore’s Food Packaging Story from the Early 20th Century, happening from 6 April to 15 September 2019, will answer all these questions and more.
Located within the Stamford Gallery, this exhibition that is free for all explores Singapore’s food packaging story through three parts – history, design, and sustainability. It highlights iconic and beloved local brands and their products, such as Khong Guan, Kickapoo and Prima Limited.
Supplemented by anecdotal stories from the pioneers and major players in the local food packaging industry, the exhibit sheds light on the evolution of the industry over the last 50 years.
Packaging Matters: Singapore’s Food Packaging Story from the Early 20th Century features more than 150 artefacts from the museum’s collection, most of which have never been displayed before.
There was no lack of interactive, hands-on activities, particularly those geared towards families and young children.
The family corner features puzzles, a creativity corner, as well as large hanging installations, which looked absolutely amazing.
Beyond the gallery experience, the National Museum will also be holding a Food and Eco-craft Market on the 6 & 7 of April, featuring a delectable selection of pastries, kuehs, and other traditional snacks. Bring your own containers and reusable utensils, or purchase them at the museum, for a special discount when purchasing food at selected stalls!
Film screenings with an indoor picnic will also be held during the opening weekend on the 6th and 7th. Catch screenings of Royston Tan’s “Old Friends” as well as selected finalists from the Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition 2018, from 12pm till 6pm.
Definitely drop by the National Museum during the opening weekend and take part in the festivities, or visit the exhibit at any time for a reflective experience while learning more about our local food heritage.
