I’m on a quest to conquer all the feet, hooves, and kickers in the animal kingdom. Last month, I began my quest by featuring 10 stalls selling chicken feet. This month, I’ve chosen something less esoteric, but equally beloved by its devout fans: pig trotters.

From the classic favourites to exotic spin-offs, here are 11 stalls with pig trotters so good you’ll make a pig of yourself!

1. Canton DuDu Pot

Pig Trotter Guide - Canton DuDu Pot

Kicking off the list is one of my favourite claypot stalls in Singapore, Canton DuDu Pot in Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre. Opened by a couple named Li Er and Clement, these two picked up the recipes of Li Er’s ageing father and opened their hawker stall near his as homage. They are very popular with Gen Zs in the area, and it’s because of their unique pig trotter.

Their Claypot Vinegar Pork Trotter (S$6.50) is affordable and big enough for two. Adding a bowl of rice costs S$0.50 per bowl, but that shouldn’t be an issue, assuming you’re sharing. Canton DuDu Pot’s pig trotter counters the traditional vinegar taste with rock sugar, making the dish more palatable for younger taste buds. No wonder they are so popular with Gen Z!

2. Shi Nian Pig Leg Rice

If you were tapped into the Singapore hawker social media scene in 2023, Shi Nian Pig Leg Rice is likely a familiar name to you. With an unbelievable 11 outlets around Singapore, the hawker turned franchise first hit the news with their generous free pig leg rice and pig trotter rice promotion in Mar 2023.

Both their Pig Trotter Rice and Pig Leg Rice cost S$5.90. Do note that the Pig Leg Rice is considered generally more meaty by frequent patrons. Both dishes come with a hearty serving of rice, salted vegetables, a piece of prawn cake, and pig leg or trotter. The meat is insanely soft, even for pig trotter standards. You can also grab a whole plate of Pig Trotter (S$9.60) too!

3. Lao Liang Pork Trotter Jelly & Shark Meat

‘Legacy’ is a word often used to describe Lao Liang Pig Trotter Jelly & Shark Meat in Berseh Food Centre. Some call their trade a dying art, a cuisine that may go extinct soon. You can spot various newspaper clippings and awards plastered all over their stall, and they deserve every single one.

Their famed Pig Trotter Jelly (S$5/8/10) capitalises on the bouncy goodness of a pig trotter’s skin and transforms it into a whole dish. You can also grab a whole Braised Pig Trotter (S$5).

The broth of their kway chap from their Guo Zhi Set (S$4) is also unique compared to others; it’s boiled with ginger and pig bones, giving it a homely taste. You read that right, S$4 for a whole kway chap set. You can’t find something like that anywhere else!

4. Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh

Pig Trotters Guide - Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh

Pig trotters in bak kut teh stalls are often overlooked, as they aren’t the main attraction of the stall. However, Joo Siah Bak Koot Teh in Kai Xiang Food Centre begs to differ. The stall is run by 2nd-generation hawker Ryan Chua, who took over the business from his father.

I love stalls that unapologetically serve a giant bowl of Pig Trotter (S$5.50) for me to pig myself over. The trotter takes on a dark hue after sitting in the broth for so long, absorbing the rich braised meat sauce and bursting with savoury flavour. Who needs a comfy bowl of bak kut teh when you have this?

5. Shen Xi Imperial Soup

Formerly Chef Sham HK Vinegar Pork Trotter, Shen Xi Imperial Soup in Chinatown Complex Food Centre serves up Hong Kong-style vinegar pork trotters, which are considered a rarity in Singapore. It’s a bit hard to find in the giant hawker centre, but the giant flashing signboards in front of the stall should guide you.

Out of the 6 soups on the stall’s menu, 3 feature pig trotters. You can’t go wrong with their signature Gold Medal Vinegar Hong Kong Pork Trotter (S$7.80), with a gingery taste accompanying the standard flavours of pork trotter. They are super generous with the number of pork trotters, up to 4 per bowl. They also have a Black Bean Pig Trotter Soup (S$5.80) and a Classic Red Bean Pig Trotter Claypot (S$5.80).

6. Maddie’s Kitchen

You may be wondering why a zi char place is on a list of pig trotters. Well, Maddie’s Kitchen in Far East Plaza has a special treat for pig trotter lovers hidden within its large menu of dishes. Opened in 2018 by owner Chef Mui Leng, the restaurant’s business was so good that they moved down to the mall’s second floor for a bigger seating area.

Usually, pig trotter is paired with white rice to counter the sharp vinegar taste of the sauce. But have you ever tried pig trotters with bee hoon? You can, in Maddie’s Kitchen with their Pig Trotter Bee Hoon (S$12.80/25.80). A dimension of light saltiness is added, along with chestnuts and mushrooms for texture. The bee hoon is soaked in a flavourful gravy that’s absorbed by the trotters, too.

7. Jang San Korean Restaurant

There are so many unique styles of serving pig trotter, with Jang San Korean Restaurant specialising in a Korean variant named jokbal. For those unaware, jokbal is a banchan-style dish where slices of braised pig trotter are served with a spread of side dishes. By the way, all the sides and sauces are refillable!

Their Signature Jokbal Set comes in Medium (S$89) and Large (S$114) sizes. The dish comes with both spicy and non-spicy pig trotters, with a giant pig leg bone separating them. The side dishes range from your standard affairs like kimchi and slices of radish, with some adventurous sides like marinated squid. This is the perfect dish to share with family, and wash down with some soju.

8. Han Jia Bak Kut Teh

I’m sure this name is a familiar sight to some. Han Jia Bak Kut Teh in East Coast Lagoon Food Village was established in 1963, and has now been taken over by 3rd-generation owners with a strong social media game. They’ve even expanded, recently opening a second outlet in Hougang Rivercourt. However, the family behind Han Jia Bak Kut Teh still considers their first outlet their home.

You can grab both Lean and Fat versions of their Pig Trotter for S$6.90 each. The trotter is so big that some consider it enough to feed 2 people. It’s the size of an adult man’s fist, with gentle herbal notes seeping throughout the trotter.

9. Authentic Mun Chee Kee King of Pig Organ Soup

If you call yourself a king, best have the chops to prove it. Authentic Mun Chee King of Pig Organ Soup is a throwback to the old days, with an interior design reminiscent of many period dramas you can find on Channel 8. The eatery is currently manned by David and Derek Tan, who took the reins from the original owner, Uncle Mun Chee, who opened the eatery in 1973.

Like quite a few entries on this list, you have some options when it comes to pig trotters. Here, it’s either a Braised Pig Trotter (S$8) or Vinegar Pig Trotter (S$8). I love that you can opt out of the vinegar taste that some dislike, the egg and braised peanuts in the soup are a good addition too.

10. Cheng Ji 成記

If the previous entry that featured pig trotter bee hoon scared you with their price, then look no further than Cheng Ji in Adam Road Food Centre. No, it’s not the seafood restaurant, this is just a humble hawker! The woman behind the stall actually took over the business from her mother-in-law in 2003, and has been here since.

You’ll notice the rows of yellow cans lined up at the storefront. Those are Narcissus Brand Pig Trotters with Mushrooms, the key ingredient to the dish. Don’t immediately assume that canned food equals bad, because their Canned Pig Trotter Bee Hoon (S$6/10/16) is a highlight and beloved by many.

Their Lean Pork Trotter (S$6/8/10) is a generously portioned piece of hind hock. It’s a classic, no-frills pork trotter, with a succulent layer of skin combined with tender meat that will leave a pleasant mess on your lips.
